"Wake up honey," my mom gently patted my arm but I pulled the covers higher to my head and sunk in deeper. As usual routine, it was 6 in the morning and mom performed her daily responsibility of waking me up. "Paris, you're gonna be late for school," she added pulling the covers away. "Mum, it's Becky, don't call me Paris please," I gritted my teeth while sitting up.
"But it's such a sweet name. You know, I loved that name so bad that I had to atleast give it to one of my children."
"Alright mum enough," I slide onto my feet and move to my wardrobe. I always hate her unending rambling about how she loved the name Paris. I literally hate that name because the girls at school say it doesn't suit me. Apparently, me being colored and not being in a relationship is enough reason not to deserve to be named after the city of love.
"Paris, mom says I have to drive you to school so hurry the fuck up and get your ass into my car," my elder brother Keron shouts at the top of his lungs although he is right outside my door.
"Just a minute Keron, I'll be out," I pull my brown thick curls into an afro burn and grab my backpack before striding towards the exit. On opening the door, my eyes land on a blank-staring Keron, whose folding his arms and staring back at me. "What?" I sneer and adjust my rounded glasses up my face. "My name's London, I prefer you call me that and this is the last time I'm warning you," he rolls his eyes and gives me a stern expression.
"Oh please, you've said that many last times before," I snort into the living room. "Mum, Keron wants to beat up a fifteen year old just because I didn't call him London," I shout once I place my backpack into the floor and race into the kitchen for breakfast.
"Paris, he won't beat you. Your brother is a gentleman," mom says after placing a plate of noodles on the table while directing a knowing look towards a smiling Keron. Unlike me, Keron wants to go by his city name, London because he thinks it's cool and suits his personality. He's seventeen, making eighteen next month, just like me. Despite the fact that Keron and I share a birth month, June, I'm two years and a week younger than him. Appearance-wise, he's the kind of guy girls would refer to as cute. He is tall and well-built, with a smooth dark skin, brilliant blue eyes, brown curly hair and a perfect smile.
"Oh mom, if I were you, I would call him a gentleman," I through Keron a threatening smirk and when he senses my snitchy mood, he immediately grabs me by my ear until we reach his car. "Oh my God Keron, you're too much. Atleast I wasn't going to tell her that I see you sticking your tongue down a different girl's throat each week."
"Whatever, I need to her to school early so shut up," he mumbles.
"I can't wait to get my own car," I slam my head on the seat's headrest and sigh.
"So that you allow guys to stick their tongues down your throat too in that fort you'll call a car? No, not happening. I would rather see my sister riding her bike to school," he activates his protective elder brother mode.
"I'm a nerd. Which boy do you expect me to make out with?" I spit, widening my eyes.
"You're a beautiful girl, though I hate the fact that people compare me to you in terms of attractiveness," he looks at me playfully disgusted. Inwardly, I agree with what he says. Not about being beautiful, but about people comparing me to him. They usually say that we have the same blue eyes though mine are always headed behind my reading glasses. Some even say that we both took over our mom's fair skin and our dad's thick brown hair, though I don't know how far that is true since my dad is never home. No, he didn't leave us, he's a business consultant in some huge African company therefore he keeps moving around the world but comes back each summer and winter holidays so we celebrate our birthdays with him.
"Whatever Keron, just park already," I say once my five minute ride comes to an end. "Okay, read hard and don't make out with any guy, not even that hunky Kyle Robin, he completely looks shitty," he smirks which triggers my nerves. I hate it when people say shit about my crush, who in this case is Kyle Robin, our school football team captain, with his fine black hair and green eyes. Since daydreaming about him would take me a whole day to recover, I quickly blink out of my trance and direct my gaze to Keron whose smiling, knowing he's touched my Archille's heel.
"Just like you did with Sasha last week and grinded your body against her," I snap and grab my backpack before opening the door of the car.
"You don't even attend parties, where do you get this shit from?" Keron furrows his eyebrows in wonder. The fact that I don't attend parties doesn't mean I don't know what transpires. Even though, I don't have friends, rumour at school spreads like wildfires so it's not so much surprise.
I fume out of the car and before I slam it, he pushes his head towards the passenger seat and shouts, "If it makes you feel any better, I dumped her after knowing that she's the slutty Sasha."
