Hisoka Morow, famed heavens arena fighter and the lover of Illumi Zoldyck, never cared much for goodbyes, granted he didn't actually have to say it all too often, but when he did, it was a mocking statement, a sick farewell to his victims, never laced with any true emotion or sincerity. He actually hated goodbyes.
Illumi Zoldyck, eldest son of the Zoldyck family, powerful assassin and most importantly the lover of Hisoka Morow. Not once had the man uttered such trivial words such as goodbye before, he deemed it unnecessary, a waste of breath at best.
It was a simple slip up, the two had let their guard down, one of the most basic rules in their infamous line of work was to never let their guard down, but they were overcome by their arrogance and turned their back on the enemy for a mere second. A mistake Illumi would never have made if it were not for the magician beside him, his influence had seeped into him after all their years of partnership, and it, unfortunately, had just led to their untimely demise. The enemy took their opportunity and used their nen to take down the two men so fast that by the time they had realised, it was far too late.
They always saw themselves as invincible, a classic case of hubris. Yet here they were, incapacitated next to each other on the ground, warm blood seeping from the both of them, far too much to be deemed a small injury, this was serious, and they both knew it.
Illumi used what energy he had at that time to turn his gaze to Hisoka, taken aback at his condition. Hisoka was no stranger to injury, being the man he was, but the blood cascading from his mouth was unsettling to say the least, the usual star and teardrop he adorned on his face had been almost completely wiped off, small traces of the outlines remained, but barely enough for it to be visible, he wore a disgusted expression on his face. The man had devoted his life to finding a worthy opponent to send him to the grave, that was what Illumi was for, he took comfort in the fact that he was going to die by illumis hands, but that plan had just been completely soiled, all his hard work, all his toys, all for nothing, what a waste.
Illumi remained expressionless, until a single, salty teardrop begun to fall from his eye, then another, and another, until his face contorted into one burdened with great despair. He knew it was the end for him, and that would have been okay, if he hadn't of known it was the end for his beloved too. There was so much he wanted them to do together, so many things he still wanted to say, so many more smiles, laughs, embraces and gentle kisses, he still had yet to have that picnic they planned out all those months ago, well he supposed it was too late now. Illumi, at the very least, wanted a proper goodbye, if he couldn't have all the things they had planned to have, wether hisoka wanted to admit their fate or not.
"Hisoka."
He wondered if he'd even get a response for the man, god he hoped he would.
"Yes, darling"
Even in his last moments he was still a gentleman, Illumi thought to himself.
"You know this is it, don't you?"
"You're wrong, my love, you always like to think the worst of situations"
And there it was, Illumi was right, as far as he knew anyway. Too focused on what his next words were going to be, Illumi failed to notice the lone tear that had managed to escape Hisoka's eye.
The magician hated to face the truth, and this was certainly one of those times, deep down he knew this was the end for them, but the least he could do is let them pass on still holding onto hope, he couldn't let them go on a bad note. His thought process was interrupted by Illumi's unusually weak voice.
"I know you don't want to set your pride aside. And wether you listen or not, I just wanted to say-"
Before he could utter the words goodbye Hisoka interrupted.
"-thank you, just say thank you, that is enough for me, my sweet"
It was hard for him to pretend as though they were going to be okay, he knew Illumi would insist on saying goodbye, he also knew the assassin had never said that word before, and he wasn't going to let him start now.
Illumi should've seen that coming, the subtle struggle in Hisokas voice was a telltale sign that their time was running short, and if Hisoka preferred to hear a thank you, then so be it.
"Thank you, Hisoka, my sunshine"
The magician was taken aback by the last part of Illumi's statement, nonetheless, it brought a weak smile to his lips. Illumi noticed the smile and, in an attempt to stop it from faltering, decided to continue.
"Thank you, Hisoka, for all the coffees you made for me after my missions, for all the hot baths you ran for me when my skin was sore, for all the times you brushed through my tangled hair after a long day, for all the times you gave me a reason to get out of bed, and for being my beloved."
Illumi could have carried on for an eternity, but he was growing weaker, he couldn't muster up any more words, as much as he wished he could, but the steady flow of tears rolling down Hisoka's face was a enough for him to know that he'd said enough, that he could be still now.
Hisoka chose not to use his words, he feared if he did so, his facade would fall, allbeit already full of cracks. He came to the conclusion that he would say his thank you through actions, as hard as that would be in his currant state, he'd do it no matter what.
It took all his strength to move his body in Illumi's direction, however, before his eyes could fall upon the face of his beloved, he closed them. He wanted to remember Illumi's face when it was full of life, when it was radiant and passionate, not burdened and in pain. He brought his finger up to Illumis face and stroked his lips, locating them, he Leaned in ever so gently and placed one final, deep, loving kiss on Illumi's lips, the lips that had once been so smooth and warm, he did his best to ignore the dry blood and salty tears that had coated them, he couldn't bare it.
Illumi could no longer move, he knew two things, the former being that he was so, so cold, and the latter being that after their final kiss, Hisoka had gone limp on his chest, just before he was about to close his eyes for the last time, he heard a wheeze erupt from hisokas chest before he heard one faint word.
"Thank y-"
Cut off by his own body, Hisoka was unable to finish his farewell, but the kiss had said it all. Illumi let out a single, shaky breath, simply wishing he could join Hisoka as soon as possible. As troubling as the situation was, he found slight comfort in the fact that they had got to bid their loving farewells their own way, that they would die in each others arms, and most importantly, that until the very end, hisoka had refused to let them die a lonely death. These thoughts would be the last thing to cross Illumis mind before he succumbed to his injuries.
At least they didn't have to say goodbye.
oh my god ouch ouch ouch I am so sorry
