Starting Over

Ch. 14

"Wands... we're home." Steve said placing a hand on her shoulder "wake up, kiddo."
"Home?" Wanda asked sleepily she unwrapped her arms from around Steve's.
"Yep." Steve said helping her up, keeping one arm to support the baby was now awake, looking around. The baby looked tentatively at Wanda for a moment, as she wiped her eyes, but smiled at the way the light reflected off of the rings on her fingers.
"You like Wanda, hmm?" Steve asked the baby as Wanda gave the baby a smile, reaching out a finger for her to hold. "I think she likes you Wands."
Wanda was surprised when the baby reached out her arms towards her, she hesitated before taking the baby in her arms. Wanda let out a small laugh as the baby played with the necklaces that were around her neck.  The baby smiled a big smile, Wanda smiled back. She could feel the warm energy radiating from the baby, she was happy.
"Come on let's go get the little one checked out in the medbay, Your Mama's already there." Steve said putting an arm around Wanda. Wanda hadn't noticed that Natasha had managed to leave before them with the other little girl in tow. She frowns slightly but pushes down any emotions she may be feeling about the fact, there's more important things to worry about like keeping the baby in her arms smiling.
When Steve and Wanda arrive at the med bay, a nurse immediately comes to take the child away which resulted in Wanda's hair being pulled and sobs shaking the baby's small body. Wanda is the first to notice the energy in the room, it feels sad and the next thing she knows the nurse who is trying to to coherence the baby from Wanda's arms, already half-way in her grip, backs away abruptly.
"What's wrong?" Steve asks from behind her.
"Her eyes.... they're glowing." The nurse says. Wanda turns the baby to face her, who still has tears streaming from her eyes, but she can still see it. They're glowing, blue. Wanda doesn't have time to analyze much before there is a loud cracking sound and the power goes out.
"Well I guess we know what her enhancements are." Steve says moving to place a hand on Wanda's back, who tenses. "The generators should kick in any second.... Wands, you okay?"
"I'm...just a little dizzy." Wanda replies and Steve notices she's leaning into him.
"Let's sit down." He says guiding her into one of the chairs in the hallway as the power comes back on. The baby is now perfectly content, Wanda's necklace in hand. Steve watches Wanda close her eyes for a few minutes.
"Feeling better?" He asks when she finally opens them again. Wanda nods slowly.
"Just a headache now." Wanda says focusing her attention back on the baby in her lap. "Can we go find Mama now?"
"Yeah let me take the little one." Steve says reaching out his arms for the baby who surprisingly goes to him without a fight. They make there way down the hallway to the examination rooms where Natasha had told him they would be.

Natasha sat waiting with the little girl on her lap in the exam room, when Dr. Cho entered.
"Agent Romanoff, good to see you and before your release next week." Dr. Cho said
"Special circumstances... I'm sure Maria prepped you from the jet?" Natasha replies
"Yes, let's run a few tests. I'm thinking brain scans, bloodwork, they'll both show what enhancements she has if any." Dr Cho says motioning for a nurse to come in. The nurse comes into the room carrying a tray with medical supplies. Natasha notices the little girl tense as she eyes the tray, looking at the needle.
"Hurt?" She asks in Russian, hand squeezing Natasha's that are across her lap.
"Just a little bit, it'll be really quick." Natasha replies "we just want to make sure you're okay." Natasha smiles at the little girl.
"No hurt... don't wan' hurt." The little girl shakes her head as tears pool in her eyes.
"Shh it's okay, Malyshka." Natasha says rubbing the girls back "I'll be here the whole time." The girl relaxes after a moment but tears stream down her face. The nurse takes this as her cue to approach them after Natasha nods. Just as the nurse is about to start the girls bloodwork, the power goes off startling the girl.
"Hey it's okay, you're okay." Natasha says as she feels the girl tense. When the lights come back on the little girl is nowhere to be seen.
"Malyshka? Where are you?" Natasha asks, she probably wouldn't have found the girl if not for the sniffling sounds she heard from behind the examination bench. "Hey, you're alright. I know that was scary, can you come out?" Natasha asks, amazed when the girl appears out of thin air and walks into her open arms. "Well I guess the tests aren't necessary now hmm?"
"Remarkable..." Dr. Cho sighs "I still suggest that we do the blood work as it will allow us to view her enhancements at a closer level."
"You think we can do that?" Natasha asks the little girl, who looks hesitant but nods.
"You no go?" She asks in English this time.
"I'm staying right here." Natasha says sitting down with the girl on her lap again. The little girl flinches as the nurse draws her blood but stays planted in Natasha's lap. "Good job, kiddo." Natasha smiles at the girl, she'll take that as a win because the girl smiles back at her. Dr. Cho excuses herself to run the tests and tells them a nurse will be back to draw the babies blood when she arrives.
"Good job?" She asks
"Yep, you were very brave." Natasha replies. Turning when Steve, Wanda, and the baby enter the room. Wanda looking exhausted.
"Baby, what happened?" Natasha says holding an arm out for Wanda, who enters Natasha's embrace and buries her head in her shoulder.
"We found out her enhancements ." Steve said gesturing towards the baby "Wanda was holding her, they hurt her head. Apparently little miss didn't want to leave Wanda and thought turning off the lights would be a good idea." Steve said bouncing the baby on his legs
"Well she scared her other sister too." Natasha said glancing at the other girl in her arms. "She disappeared on me."
"Other sister?" Steve questions smirking. Natasha nods, a genuine smile on her face as she scoots over to make room for Wanda on the bench. The teen happily sighs into her embrace. Natasha smiles running a hand over the girls head. They needed to have a conversation later just the two of them. A nurse enters ready to proceed with the blood work for the baby, instruction Steve on how to hold her so she could perform the test quickly. He makes faces at the baby, who smiles through the test. Everyone sighs in relief, glad to avoid another incident with the lights. Both the nurse and Dr. Cho arrive a moment with the results from the test.
"So good news, both of their DNA sequences seem to be relatively normal. No enhancements to speed or strength, just the performance of the experiments that gave them their powers. All their levels look good but the physical exams Friday conducted do show that both seem to be malnourished and have experienced small trauma such as bruising and small cuts. Based on the scans it appears that they are 3 years old and 8 months old." Dr. Cho states. " I'm assuming you two, are taking them in?"
"Yeah, Maria is going to send over the paper work." Steve answers.
"Great, with stability and a home. They should both be perfect in no time." Dr. Cho replies "Don't hesitate to reach out if you all need anything."
"Thanks." Natasha replies, as Dr. Cho exits the room.
"Let's go home." Steve says getting off one of the chairs and making his way over to the bench, holds his hand out for the little girl. She happily takes it, walking in between him and Natasha. Wanda walking close to Natasha's side.
