Today will be good. Today I'll be confident. Today I'll talk to everyone! Today I'll-
My thoughts were interrupted by my brother, who was running in my room.
"Declan! Get out!" I yelled. He swung his little body around my door, crashing into my shelf. He looked up at me and tried not to laugh.
"Oops," he said, starting to laugh with his blonde hair covering his eyes. I gave him the death stare, as he slowly got up from my floor, picking up the few books that had fallen.
"What are you doing? I'm trying to get ready for school. Get. Out," I said through gritted teeth. Declan left without saying another word, still laughing. I went over to my door and locked it.
As I was finishing getting ready, I heard a small knock come from my door. Before I even opened the door, I knew it was my mom. Her small, gaunt body in my door way always scared me, but she is far from scary. Her face is beautiful, with melancholy blue eyes and small wrinkles in her forehead. Her hands soft and warm, always ready to comfort someone.
"Cassaletta, can you take Declan to school?" she asked in her fragile voice. I could never say no to her. She always sounded like she was on the verge of crying. Ever since my dad died, she became weak. She started calling me by my full name instead of the usual "Cas" or "Cassie," and always asked me to take Declan to school on days she didn't feel good.
"Sure mom," I said with a small smile, kissing her head the way my dad used to before dropping me off at school, saying goodnight, or even just because he loved me. She smiled as I turned away to grab my backpack. I straightened my hair, put on mascara and looked at myself in the mirror one last time.
I walked downstairs to the kitchen where Declan was already shoving pancakes into his little mouth. I sat down next to him, grabbing a pancake of my own.
"I don't understand how an 11 year old can be so skinny but yet eat so much," I smiled to Declan as he was chewing and grabbing a 5th pancake.
"I don't understand how a 17 year old still hasn't had a boyfriend," He retaliated. I have him the death stare once again, stabbing my fork into his pancakes. He chuckled and we continued to eat. He grabbed another pancake and started to hum the song my mom used to sing to him when he was little.
I took the last couple bites of my pancake when I realized the dog still hasn't eaten. Declan looked over at me and noticed too. "You better feed Buster, Cas," he chewed with a grin.
"Finish eating so we can go," I said as I got up and fed the dog.

After I dropped off Declan at his school, I drove to my school. I had some time to kill, so I figured I could just wait in the car until my friends arrived, like usual after I drop off Declan.
However, today was different. When I pulled up in the school parking lot, a rusty, black car was in my parking spot. I noticed that there was only one person in the car, and I've never seen the car before. Maybe a new teacher, I thought.
I pulled into the parking spot next to the car. I looked over and saw a guy. I was stunned back. His brown hair was a mess. His jeans were a dark blue and he was wearing a black crewneck. I stared at him for a while, as he listened to music with his eyes closed, his head bobbing slightly to the beat of whatever he was listening to. I couldn't take my eyes off of him.
Suddenly, I heard a knock on my window, which jolted me out of my trance.
"Jesus, Hailey. You gave me a heart attack," I said as my best friend got in the passenger seat, her phone in her hand, Snapchatting my reaction.
"Sorry-not-sorry," Hailey chuckled, getting ready to post my scare all over her story.
"You better @ me at least," I laughed as she did, and then saved it. We took a selfie and then Hailey looked over at me.
"Cassie, you look old in that outfit," I was dumbfounded. My mouth opened slightly as she insulted my clothes. "You're really pretty! Why don't you show off your body more! Get clothes that are 'in' and new!"
"I like my clothes, Hailey. This what I've always worn," I spoke slowly, trying to hide hurt in my voice.
"C'mon, let's go in before someone snatches the new kid up!" Hailey was already crawling out of my truck.
"What new kid?" I thought aloud. "I don't remember any talk about a new kid."
"Um, who do you think that guy was next to you?" she said, closing the door. I hopped out of my truck and started to follow Hailey. I noticed the guy had gotten out of his car and was starting to walk towards the building. I turned around, towards the guy.
Today is a good day. Today, I am confident.
