Sitting up you looked around. You vaguely remember Mabel standing next to your bed, shaking the person lying next to you as quietly as she could. You were disoriented, and you could see her lips moving, but all you could remember was jumbled mumbles that your mind couldn't quite figure out. You had fallen back asleep, not quite having the energy to move at that point in the morning.
Reaching over to the table beside your bed in order to check the time, you realized the curtains seemed to be drawn, darkening the room. This only served to further confuse you, jumbling up what little sense of time you might have had. You flinched as the screen lit up, the light shining too brightly for your eyes despite being on its lowest setting. It was roughly two in the afternoon. You sat up slightly, leaving your phone faced down next to you as you allowed your eyes to adjust to the dark surroundings of the room.
You stayed like that for a few minutes before you got up. Pulling your sweater over your shoulders you slipped on your shoes. You slipped your phone into your pocket, deciding to eat something before Stan would inevitably tell you to start for the day. You slipped into the kitchen without running into any of the other members of the Pines family. Preparing your cereal, you began to hum a familiar tune. You couldn't quite remember the name of the song you were humming, but it didn't bother you as you sat down at the table. Pulling out your phone you began to scroll through it idly.
You didn't hear the footsteps coming up from behind you, or the sound of muffled giggles. "BOO!," you heard a voice say. Your lack of reaction seemed to turn the girl's attempt at a scary face into a pout. "Aww, I didn't scare you," Mabel said. You just stared at her blankly, and she just giggled, grabbing the cereal box you left on the table and turning to pour one for herself. The moment she turned around you let out a breath, leaning over the side of your chair as your hand clutched your heart. She had terrified you, but you were a master of the poker face, and you weren't about to let her get the upper hand on you.
As she turned back to you, she gave you a very large smile, her metal braces glinting as she began to talk to you about her latest crush of the month. She had mellowed down from last year, especially when it came to boys. But she would always be good old Mabel. Good old Mabel. Looking up you hummed as she called your name. "Are you listening to me?," she asked, her voice quieter than what you were used to. Looking up at her, you only hummed. The growing tension in the room made you desperate to hurry up and finish eating as she began to talk once again.
Things between the two of you have been tense since last year, and neither of you had been quite sure how to fix it. So you just played along to her antics in hopes she would be satisfied with how much she had convinced herself she had, "fixed," your relationship. If she wanted to have a, "best friends day," at the mall, or for you to join in with her and her friends on their "girls night," where they would force you to let them do your makeup, whether you liked it or not. If she wanted to take you to the park to find the, "perfect person," for you, you would go, despite whatever lame excuse you would make up against it.
You held your fist over your closed mouth in a lame attempt to muffle a cold cough that rose up from the back of your throat. You ignored the eye's of the girl in front of you as you coughed. It's part of the reason you let her do all the talking. The moment you made even the smallest of noises her eyes would turn to you, and you despised it. Looking back at her cereal, her voice stopping completely as the two of you allowed the silence to suffocate you. But alas, Mabel's eyes were drawn back to you once you stood up. Her eyes would make a quick turn to her cereal when you made eye contact, but would turn back to you as you approached the sink. It was a cruel process, one that she wouldn't realize she was putting on you, but was one that happened nonetheless. Washing your bowl you had begun to grow increasingly uncomfortable with the pair of eyes that felt as though they were staring holes into your back.
Turning around you smiled in amusement as Mabel whipped her head back to her cereal. As you walked past her your hand grazed the top of her head, causing her to look at your form that was heading towards the kitchen doorway. Making a split second decision, Mabel called out to you.
Turning towards her you noted unsureness in her eyes. "Yes?," you asked her in a soft voice. You realize you hadn't spoken in hours. Mabel remained silent for a second, cursing herself for calling out for you. Her calling out to you was a split second decision, more impulsive than anything, and she tried not to let that fact deter her from her ultimate goal.
You watched her smile waver, for just a second, before coming back full force. "Wanna go to the park today?," she asked excitedly. You looked outside through the window. You could practically see the sun melting everything that dared enter its domain. Soos had fixed the AC a few years ago, which served to bring in even more tourists and town dwellers alike (especially considering you could only come in if you were taking the tour, something you need to buy a ticket for, or you were going to buy something from the gift shop :/). You glanced back at her, hope shining in her eyes.
"... Uh, I'm pretty sure I have work today," you said. Giving her a small smile you turned back around to take your leave. Her eyes widened in alert, and you heard her chair scrape as she got up, moving accordingly. "Wait!" She stumbled a bit, her attempt to grab your wrist exploited as you moved out of her reach. You both stood there in silence as a horrified look came across Mabel's face. She just realized that you hated when people grabbed your wrist, or touched you in general. Except Dipper for some weird reason. She had tried to set you up on dates plenty of times, but each time failed as the two of you would turn it into a friend's date. You even cooperated with him whenever the two of you had one of the, "best friends day." (The very same thing she prided herself in having the record of when it came to success. She just couldn't seem to figure out Dipper's secret >:/).
She personally didn't get it, and she would forget it often. It wasn't a problem because the two of you had stopped being physically affectionate years ago. But sometimes she slipped, and if she wanted to spend proper time together with you, touching you was the worst thing she could've done in that moment. She looked up at you, fear in your eyes about how you would react, but grew confused at the sound of your laughter.
As she looked at your laughing face, her eyes grew in wonder. You looked back at her with gentle eyes, and she began to wonder why she had ever thought you would react negatively. It just wasn't in your nature, and you had never done so before. She couldn't help but laugh alongside you as she stood up straight. The two of you began to quiet down. Looking at you with relief in her eyes, you decided to have mercy on the girl. You could shove aside your discomfort for a little while. "How about... We go to the ice rink?," you suggested. You watched her smile grow, her excitement becoming very evident as her eyes lit up.
"O-Ok!," she said, her enthusiasm practically bursting out of her. You nodded as you smiled, mentally preparing yourself for the day ahead of you.
