chapter five!

"YOU'VE GOT TO BE KIDDING ME," groaned Alex as she glanced down at the number on her phone, Noah quickly looking over at her to make sure everything was okay. The two were gathering supplies from the storage room when her phone rang. To begin with, she figured it was Dr. Hogan checking in on how Alex's mother was doing, but that idea disappeared the moments she saw the caller ID. Her hand squeezed her phone, the other hand gripping the railing of one of the supply carts.

"What?" asked Noah, grabbing her hand from the rail instinctively. "What's going on? Are you okay?"

"It's my dad," Alex frowned. Noah looked down at the still-vibrating phone, and the caller ID was, in fact, one from a prison in New York. "He hasn't tried calling in a few months and I thought that he'd given up, but apparently not."

"Do you want to talk to him?" asked Noah. His tone wasn't pushy or demanding, but more soft and concerned. "Cause you don't have to if you don't want to."

"I don't know," she said, her voice wavering and her hand beginning to shake, along with her phone that she was still gripping tightly. It was true, she didn't know whether or not she wanted to speak with him. He'd ruined her life in so many ways, but he was still her dad and once upon a time, they were very close. She realized that no matter how far she got in life, he would always have a hold on her. He would always be there to manipulate and hurt her. "No. I don't think so."

"Okay," nodded Noah, softly grabbing the phone from her hand. Her hand had paled from where the phone had left it's imprint. "I'm going decline the call, is that okay?"

"Mhm," she hummed, using her now free hand to wipe the tears from her eyes. She hated how she always got upset when this happened, and she hated that it had happened in front of someone else. She'd always been pretty good at being alone and covering up the feelings that she felt towards the subject.

Noah then declined the call, turning the phone back off and setting it to the side. Pulling Alex into a hug, he tried to comfort the now sobbing girl. Her hands were still trembling as she leaned into his chest. He heard the door open and Mr. LaRusso looked in, quickly doing a double take before shooting Noah a look of concern. Noah shook his head, giving a pointed look to her phone before mouthing her dad. Daniel's face dropped in sympathy, giving Noah a questioning look, as if asking if he had it handled. Noah nodded, Daniel then leaving the room to them to sort everything out.

It pained Daniel how much of a scar her father had left on Alex's life. He'd never thought that he would've felt such rage over someone he'd never met, but he truly hated Carl Deaser.

It only took Alex a few minutes to calm down, which didn't surprise Noah because Alex seemed the type of person to want to bounce back quickly— no matter the situation. She had insisted on apologizing, what for Noah didn't know.

"I'm sorry," she whispered shakily, pulling away from the hug and wiping her tears on the sleeve of her hoodie. He couldn't help but notice that her hands were still shaking as she picked up her phone and put in her pocket. "Thank you for that, though."

"Well, first of all, there's no reason to apologise. Or to thank me, for that matter. I'm your friend, and friends help each other. Especially though shit like that," he reassured, and Alex couldn't help but chuckle at how he blushed when he cursed. His innocence really was amazing. "And second of all, that butthole doesn't have any right to even try that bull crap. Not after everything he's put you through. And I realize that it's not my place to say that, but I feel like it needs to be said. If that's okay with you. I won't say it again if you don't want me to, I swear."
