There's a beautiful story I heard today on Hare Krsna TV. It is something like this:
Once there was an island and all the feelings in the personified form used to reside. It includes the emotions such as love, compassion, hate, kindness, hunger, guilt and others. That was a lonely island, and seawater was all around it. One day, a storm came by, and everyone feared. And guess which one was successful giving them shelter? It was love.
Love made a significant and attractive boat that has all the features of safety and comfort. It invited all the feelings in the island, and everyone followed the command, except one. Ego stayed behind because of its innate nature. It did not want to leave the lovely peninsula behind. It thought, "Oh, I have made my home here. This is mine, and I'm not going to leave it."
So love, being the shelter of all, decided to take ego with it. Love stepped out of the luxurious boat and started talking to the ego. It was trying to convince the ego that the ship is safe and it can find a new home. Nevertheless, ego did not listen. Meanwhile, the storm came, and both ego and love drowned. Since all the feelings were on the boat, they stayed safe.
Moral: Ego and love cannot be under the same shelter. It would be either ego or love. You have to decide which one to select. I would choose love over ego since it is the ultimate shelter that can save everyone, even hate, in the storm.
