A broken promise

Intro (kinda)

   I quietly walk towards the forest with my book, I can hear children running around me playing tag as I walk into the forest, the sun shines brightly making the forest seem like a forest of light, I make my way through bushes, fallen tree branches, and rocks until I reach a great oak tree.

  I put my book in my mouth and I start climbing, when I get to a big sturdy branch I put my book down and I catch my breath, I sit down and start reading, when I'm halfway done I hear the bell ring, I quickly put my book back in my mouth and start climbing down, once I get down I grab my book and start running back to the house.

When I get back to the house I'm covered in sweat, I stop in front of the door and catch my breath, I see mom waiting by the door for me.
"My my, you must be exhausted." She says in a soothing voice, she opens the door for me, I go in to do my chores with everyone else.

  After we do our chores it's free time, I make sure there's no one around and I go over to my bed to finish my book, I hear loud yelling and footsteps near the door, the door opens and a bunch of children run in, I decide to ignore them when I hear a loud voice next to me.

  "Hey Mai!, do you wanna play hide and seek with us?" I look over and it's Connie, she smiles at me with little bunny in her hand , I look down at her, "Sorry Connie I'm not in feeling very well, you can go ask Emma or Norman to play with you." She frowns but then smiles again, "Okay, I hope you feel better, see you later!" She says before running back to the pack of children she was with.

Among the older children I'm not the most popular, I've never really liked interacting with everybody else, I found them too immature and silly for their ages, you could say I've matured more or that I'm just a loner, either way I'm fine with that.

I head down to the kitchen to help make dinner, when I get there Gilda's preparing potatoes, I was my hands and I get out three chicken packages from the ice box, I set them aside to unthaw, I cut up vegetables and put them in a big pan along with some oil, I also leave some out so I can fry them, I preheat the oven and wait for the chicken to unthaw, once the chickens are done unthawing I unwrap the strings and take out the chickens and put them in the pan, I season them well and put them in the oven, I put the vegetables in a hot pan with some oil and wait for them to cook.

  When the chickens are done I take them out and prepare plates for everyone, Gilda puts on the potatoes and I place pieces of chicken on the plates along with the vegetables, then Gilda places the potatoes on, we set the tables then we put the plates out, Gilda rings the dinner bell and kids come rushing in.

  "Before we eat I have an announcement, Anne's getting adopted!" Mom says and everyone cheers congratulating Anne, I sigh then start eating with everyone else, I finish before everyone else, I excuse myself and go up to the library to grab a few books, I hum moms lullaby while looking for books, I hear someone enter the library, I stop humming and turn around to see who it is, It's Ray, he ignores me and picks up a book that was on a table, he sits down and reads in the corner, I quickly grab a few books and rush out of the library to my room.

  Once everyone's asleep I quietly grab my boots and my blanket, I try to sneak quietly to the door but I accidentally stumble over Emma's shoes, I silently curse at myself and keep on going, I open it and walk out into the hallway up to the window at the end, I put on my boots and wrap my blanket up in a small bundle, I quietly open the window and climb up to the roof, I crawl up to the top and wrap my blanket around me, I look up at the sky, it looked like a sea of stars, each one different and unique, I watch the stars for a few hours then I go carefully go back to the window, I sneak back into the window and go back to the room.

  "Where did you head off to?" I hear as I open the door, I look around and there's someone sitting on the windowsill, it's hard to tell who it is but I can tell by their voice it's someone older "I just went to get some water." I say hiding my blanket behind my back, the person gets down and starts walking towards me, "For two hours?" I start sweating, "I- uh, I fell asleep." I say trying to sound natural while I brush past the person, going to my bed, I take out the matchbox from my drawer and light the lantern by my bed, I pick it up and turn towards the person, to my surprise it's Ray, "Why are you up this late Ray?." I ask inching closer to him, he turns around and walks back to his bed leaving me facing the door, that's weird, I put out my lantern and go back to bed.

You see, there are two things I'm good at, manipulation, and having a poker face, when I want to, I use these two things to help me in any way possible.
