~CHAPTER 5 - Change~

Roxanne

I tried opening my eyes but something heavy was keeping them shut. It felt as though I was in a sunny room, but I couldn’t be sure. It was so warm and I felt clammy. I could smell grime and blood, and water somewhere in close proximity. I was parched and the blood smelled so enticing. My wits froze as I realized my judgment. There was no way I was able to smell blood. I struggled with myself, though I couldn’t find my body in the darkness. I was drifting in a motion of nothingness.

“You’re too weak. You won’t be able to open your eyes.”

“I’m too weak? What does that mean? Who are you?” I asked almost too rapidly for me to even take notice of what I was saying. But that voice, it was so familiar – too familiar. I could’ve sworn I’ve heard that voice before.

“My name is Kaure. And yes, you have heard my voice before.”

How did she know that? I wasn’t speaking aloud so she could hear. But I couldn’t worry about that; the first thing I had to do was open my eyes, and then I would worry about the rest. I struggled for a few more moments, eventually resigning. I was too feeble to even open my eyes, yet alone fight the darkness.

“My eyes…” I said. “Please help me open my eyes.”

Kaure shifted towards me, assisting me in sitting up. I held on to her arm, not sure whether I was able to sit up on my own. She handed me something which I assumed to be a goblet. I held it firmly in one hand, uncertain of what I should do.

“Drink up.” she said. “It will help give you strength.”

I did as she said. At first I was hesitant, but after the first taste, I gulped it all down without further ado. It had been the most scrumptious drink I had ever had. I could feel my strength returning, power blazing through my veins. I was able to open my eyes and take in my environs. I was in some kind of crypt, it wasn’t sundrenched as I expected it to be – it was gloomy. The light I thought to be the sun was actually a small bonfire in the corner of a tomb. The flames were so brilliant, that it hurt my eyes.

“Where am I?” I asked Kaure, shifting further away from her.

Fear washed over me as I took notice of her pitch black eyes. Her skin was remarkably pallid, her hair falling over her shoulders, shimmering burgundy in her beautiful brunette locks.

“You’re home.” she said, with a scheming smile on her face.

“No I’m not.” I said as severely as I could manage.

I wanted to pace up to her and demand some answers, but in its place, I moved at lightning speed. So speedy, I couldn’t get a handle on what I did. I was terrified and bemused – I had no clue as to what had happened.
