So, here's the thing: you don't have to listen to me.

Cliches are okay.

Unrealistic character designs are okay.

Weird names are okay.

My character in Ember has a cliche (probably more, too): She has a traumatic past. I love writing about traumatic pasts as it's a good way to explore psychology for me. It's also an outlet.

What I suggest for cliches is putting your own spin on them. Is there a major plot twist? Does the MC handle trauma differently than normal? What's unique about it?

Sometimes, cliches drive the plot, and then you should keep them!

Names are really up to you. You can do what you want.

Character designs are so hard to come up with. Genetics makes it difficult. Do what you want. If you want your character to have blue eyes, go for it!

Just remember that this guide isn't supposed to embarrass you or upset you. This is simply constructive and something to consider.

Do what you want, and don't worry about perfectionism!
