I sat at my desk, entering grades on my laptop. I looked down at the next homework sheet in the pile of papers I had already graded two nights ago. Once I entered the grade, I quickly moved the piece of paper to the second pile I made.

I love grading papers early in the morning at school, because I have no distractions. It's hard for me to grade at home since I am a single parent of two children and by the time they go to sleep, I'm tired my damn self and don't feel like grading or entering grades. As I entered another grade into the school system, my classroom door opened and I looked to see who it was. I saw Megan standing at my door with a hoodie on, sweatpants and red eyes. She never wears sweats to school.

"Megan? What are you doing here so early? It's 6:45, school doesn't start for another hour and fifteen minutes." I spoke, standing up with concern.

"I didn't know where else to go, I haven't slept and I knew I had to be here today."

I went over to her and wrapped my arm around her shoulder. "What's going on?"

"My grandmother died." She bursted into tears and I pulled her into my chest and hugged her as tight as I could.

"Oh my god Megan, I'm so sorry baby, jesus." I spoke, looking up at the ceiling. I don't know why God is putting so much on this girl at once, but it has to be a test. He must know she has the strength of no other, because I know I would be losing my mind and I damn sure wouldn't be here at school.

"I can't believe this Megan, you don't need to be here." I spoke truthfully.

"I didn't want to stay in the house any longer, I was losing my mind. This is the only place." She cried into my shirt, making her voice muffled.

"You need a place to relax, get some sleep and grieve. C'mon." I said before pulling away from her and gathering my things. Once I had my purse, school shoulder bag and keys, I threw my bags over my shoulder and walked with Megan to the office. I told Megan to meet me outside in the parking lot while I talked to the principal about this situation. I couldn't let Megan deal with this hardship by herself, she's only seventeen.

After I talked with the principal about Megan's precarious home situation, she excused Megan and allowed her to take a week off to mentally get herself together and have her grandmother's funeral. She also suggested that I take a couple of days off to help her since she has no one else. I agreed and promised I would be back in two days to continue regular instruction. With that, I left the main office and went out to the parking lot to find Megan. I told her to follow me as I walked to my Toyota Camry.

"What are you going to do?" Megan asked.

"Take you to my place so you can get some sleep, get in." I said as we approached my car. I unlocked the doors and we both got in. Hopefully my kids don't mind Megan staying with us for a few days.

I invited Megan into the house and she shyly walked in, looking around. I closed the door behind her and walked up beside her.

"You can stay in the guest room. I'll show you." I smiled.

She nodded her head and I guided her up the stairs of my home. When we got to the second level, we walked down the hallway and I showed her the guest room on the left hand side. Opening the bedroom door, I encouraged Megan to go in.

I stepped into the room behind her and placed my hand on her shoulder, causing her to look up at me. "I really want you to get some rest. Don't worry about anything, okay? I'll be here if you need me or if you want to talk. If you're hungry, there's more than enough food downstairs. Help yourself to anything in the house, alright?"
