𝓝ice guys always had a habit of finishing last. It was common knowledge that shy boys only received front row seats to watching the girl they liked getting swept off their feet; they didn't get the girl themselves. This is mostly because they fell into the background and they never let their interest show, and when they did it was too late.
Adrien Murray was that kind of guy. He was already living the onlooker lifestyle, watching Josie Pye be courted by Billy Andrews, a lousy choice in future husband if Adrien's opinion were asked for. That would be a rude thing to say aloud, but he couldn't help but think it. And he was quite certain he wasn't wrong, it should've been obvious that Billy was nowhere close to being the ideal man to marry.
Josie might've been mean, scary, and ridiculous with her actions majority of the time, but Adrien still believed she deserved big gestures. Call him a romantic, the title fit. Ballsy, though? Never. Or, not until the old take notice board on the side of the schoolhouse is resurrected.
It only took a lot of buttering up from friends, but Adrien finally did it. He took notice. He even got the opportunity to walk Josie Pye home, which he'd certainly never done before so he seemed to be doing all right in the whole girl field. She was still rude the whole way to her house, though, but at least he was getting somewhere, right? ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀ ⠀⠀

— everyone thinks it's ballsy bc of josie basically being courted by billy but at least it makes him notice her
— he doesn't think the rumor billy started is true
— he says smth really stupid to her after that situation tho, like "my family has more than enough money, the rumor won't matter as long as you're still married, right"
— adrien has a good heart but obviously that came out in the worst way and it's not smth josie wants to hear
— but he pops off with a sweet speech later on along the lines of "i'd accept the worst of you not matter what" and he makes it clear he knows billy is a liar
— also he apologizes and knows why what he said was wrong
— probs bc he repeats the convo go anne and she's like bro wtf no that was dumb
