Smaug walked through the halls. She traced her hand across the smooth stonewall. A sound caught her ear, "Why do you not come out from the shadows and state your purpose..." she stopped but did not turn her head, "or are you afraid... Thorin?" She turned around and he approached her. "The men and elves in Dale are surely preparing an attack, why are you stalling? I thought you wanted to fight them off" she said, " We are preparing. We have lit the forges and are sharpening the blades as we speak". "Then should you not be there and see it done?" She turned and started to walk again. As she expected he followed her. Why she did not know. Back in Lake Town he had made it quite clear, he would never want to see her shadow again. Not that she cared. "I came searching for you" he said, "Oh, and why may I ask? The last time we met, you were ready to run me through" as if you had the chance, she thought. She did not even look at him as they were nearing the forge. He stopped, "I apologize" she stopped and glared at him. Thorin Oakenshield just apologized and she laughed inwardly. "I am incomplete. The stone is gone and I think I have been deceived". She huffed, "Do tell" she said with false interest. "I can't trust them. They have never spoken against me they have always done what I asked." Smaug thought, well they had spoken against him but refusing him, none of them had ever done". "Besides of you" she snapped out of her thoughts and looked at him not sure of what he was talking about. "You are the only one who has never seen the crown. You can help find the Arkenstone... You can stand by my side" he stepped towards her. Smaug felt... sick. She choked a laugh as she tried to speak, "Thorin, if you think that I would ever join you in your request or in any other matter of, shall we call it: "partnership" you are utterly mistaken and if you knew what the truth about me was; you would not be so keen as to even consider such thoughts". Her voice was stern but for some reason he did not stop, "I don't care of you past. I want you to help me build a future" Smaug was loosing her temper and knew she had to get away fast before she incinerated him, "Let me put it this way then; I will never even consider a future with you" Thorin narrowed his eyes, "you are denying your king?" She leaned down, "You are not my king, no one is my king". With that she turned around and walked away, leaving him alone in the hallway. Smaug kept to shadows the rest of the evening. Bilbo found her just after nightfall, "Smaug I have to talk to you" she kneeled, "I have it", Smaug shook her head, "Have what?" she asked. "Bilbo leaned closer for confidence "The stone" he whispered and Smaug widened her eyes, "you have to hide it. Do not let Thorin know you have it" Bilbo shook his head, "That's it I have an idea but I might need some help" Smaug went silent, "Please" the hobbit looked at her with big eyes, "Alright then" she sighed. Bilbo showed her to the new wall, "Are you sure about this? You are risking quite much by doing this". Bilbo gave a small smile, "I am". Smaug tied the rope she had found around an old metal ring in the wall and threw the other end of the rope off the ledge, "Then go on before those miserable dwarves wake up" Bilbo stopped. "I know what you have seen of them has not been pleasant but please, I thought so too in the beginning" she looked at him and he continued, "I know they can seem greedy, lying and insolent and downright ill-mannered to put it light but they are also loyal, they take care of each other. I have actually grown quite fond of them". Smaug considered his words. She did not find herself convinced but still tried to understand, "I will not harm them without reason. That much I can promise you. Now, shoosh!" He nodded and climbed down the rope. She watched him run towards the old ruins of her desolation and sighed. The dwarves would never grow on her. But he might.

As he ran through the night he sincerely hoped Smaug would stay true to her word. He had taken a great risk asking this of her. He knew she did not care much for the affairs of men and dwarves and preferred to stay out of it. But she was one of the reasons they were all caught in this situation yet it did not seem to affect her. Bilbo slowed down just a bit. Was he naïve to think she might have a heart? He had heard from the others that dragons was mindless beasts that did not prefer anything but chaos and hoarding treasures. This was, however, proven wrong when he discovered Smaug did not care for the gold. She had even sparred his life and was now helping him. Truly there had to be more to the tale. Right? He saw the burning lights in the city and quickened his pace. First things first, he had a mission.

She was still at the wall when he returned. She had chosen to wait for his return, this was after all the most secluded place she could find for the night. The dwarves where everywhere inside. Ether walking about searching for more weapons, the Arkenstone or a place to rest. "Did you have success on your quest?" she asked as he was safely over the wall, "I believe so. They will not attack immediately but try to negotiate and..." he stopped and looked at her, "And what?" she urged. "Gandalf is here" he said in a low voice, "Indeed this is good news" Smaug was genuine. She was glad Gandalf had finally arrived and was also surprised Bilbo had succeeded his mission. When he explained her the plan she found it rather foolhardy. To deliver the Arkenstone to the Elfking and the humans was running a great risk. But he had been determined and she had agreed to help. She was about to go back to her slumber when just as the sun rays began to kiss the sky she saw the banners of the Elven army. She put a hand on Bilbo's back, "Come, we should not be here when Thorin comes". Bilbo ran down the stairs then turned towards the forge. She herself found a dark corner on the wall from where she could see everything. Finally the dwarves came and Thorin talked with Thranduil and Bard. It was more an argument than a proper talk though. Smaug waited and watched from the shadows, leaning against a pillar. Thorin was behaving as foolishly as she had expected. Right now she almost felt the need to throw him off the ledge but contained herself. She could see Thorin did not believe Bard when he showed the Arkenstone in his hand, "They are taking us for fools. A filthy lie" Thorin sneered, "The Arkenstone is in this mountain! It is a trick!" She chuckled, then saw the hobbit come forward and had never expected what was going to happen next. Bilbo stepped up and Smaug tensed, "The stone is real. I gave it to them" She saw Thorin become tense. Bad move little one, Smaug thought to herself but still did not expect what transpired then. Thorin ordered his execution. That he should be thrown down from the wall. Smaug was a little surprised none of the dwarves followed his orders. Maybe the hobbit had been right about something. No time to ponder because Thorin suddenly grabbed Bilbo's jacket and pushed him against the ledge. Smaug was about to intervene when she heard a familiar voice, "If you do not like my burglar then please return him to me. Un harmed" Gandalf. He had come and this made Thorin stop and release the hobbit, "You do not make a splendid figure as king under the Mountain, Thorin son of Thrain" Gandalf called up to him. No indeed, Smaug thought as she watched the other dwarves help Bilbo down the rope. Bard's voice bellowed, "What is your answer? Will you have peace... or war?" Smaug looked at Thorin who did not indicate that he was going to answer the man. Then a raven landed on the stone railing. Thorin took the message that was attached to its leg. The bird looked at Smaug and immediately took off. "I will have war" Thorin sneered. Smaug could hear it. The thousands feet marching towards them. Dain, she thought, from the Iron Hills. She was getting bored. This endless talking was tiresome and Dain had many a thing to say it seemed. Mostly insults. She was on her way deeped into the mountain when a rumbling noise made her stop. She growled and ran back to the gate. She arrived just as a giant wereworm broke through the hillside followed by another two. The creatures crushed the hard stones as if they were made of glass and then drew back into the holes from where they had come. Just as they disappeared a black army came forth and Azog the Defiler's voice rang out across the land. The field was soon filled with the Defiler's army of orcs and goblins alike and more were coming. Smaug cursed in her mind. It was time. Dain ordered his trrops to take formation and face the new enemy and Gandalf tried to plead with Thranduil but the stubborn elf did nothing. The company was ready to go over the wall but Thorin stopped them, "Stand down" the dwarves looked astonished, "are we to do nothing?!" Kili spoke out, "I said stand down!" Thorin yelled and made his way down the stairs leaving. Smaug lost her patience and screamed at the elf king, "Now is not the time to stand idly by and watch. This battle is not just the dwarves' to fight but everyone's!" Thranduil looked into her eyes but could only see a wildfire within them. He took a moment then nodded to his captains and the elves joined the battle. The orc army kept coming out of the holes, thundering as they charged towards them. The dwarves had created a shield wall between the orcs and the mountain. They pointed their spears towards the upcoming enemy, but as they were just a short distance away the elves jumped the dwarves' heads and sliced through the first orcs and goblins. The dwarves rose to their feet and swung their axes around. The singing swords of the elves had joined the crushing axes of the dwarves.
