Why when you praise me do I feel dismayed?
I see, oh my, my maydays heave a sigh;
I stand upon the threshold of a cry:
I know my stories, ironies arrayed.
Whatever fool acts and misdeeds did down
the happiness of others, wounded deep
deep feel again and hand to head I weep
though now no longer blame myself alone.
Tragedies from weakness and from stiff fear
spring like cats furr-fluffed with arching backs:
in shock, we're shocked at how we shock, and drear
our life runs out like water, heart like wax.
I ask a grave forgive me my mistake,
and taste the talons of Blodeuwedd's* rake.

*The mythical Blodeuwedd is featured in the fourth branch of the Mabinogi. She is a woman created from flowers by Math and Gwidion, for a man cursed to take no human wife. She betrays that husband Lieu in favour of another man, Gronw, and is turned into an owl as punishment for inducing Gronw to kill Lleu. In Garner's tale (The Owl Service) three teenagers find themselves re-enacting the story (Para from Wikipedia).
