train tracks
{olivia's pov}

the five of us met up and started walking along the train tracks in the bright sun.

"well what do we need a pistol for anyway?" vern asked as chris and gordie finished telling their story behind blue point diner.

"it's spooky sleeping out at night in the woods. we might see a bear," chris replied. that suddenly made me scared to sleep outside. i didn't mind it before. i knew the guys would protect me. well, maybe. "or a garbage can," he finished, looking at me when he said that. i playfully punched his arm.

"shut up," i said nonchalantly. i couldn't help but smile though. all of the boys chuckled, realizing chris was referring to the story behind the diner.

"i brought a comb," vern said. i laughed.

"what do we need a comb for?"

"if we get on tv, we want to look good, don't we?" he asked. "especially you, olivia. you have longer hair than we do! it'll be messy." i pretended to look offended, because i knew he didn't mean to insult me in any way.

"is that supposed to be a compliment?" i asked. before vern could reply, gordie spoke.

"that's a lot of thinking, vern!" he said.

"thanks!" vern exclaimed, obviously proud of bringing a comb with on the trip. we all stopped, looking at the tracks ahead of us. it was sure gonna be hell of a long two days with four guys.

"how far do you think it's gonna be?" teddy asked. chris put his hands on his hips and sighed.

"if we follow the tracks all the way into harlow, it'd be about twenty miles. sound about right to you, gordie?"

"yeah, it might even be thirty," he said.

"we should probably get going then, shall we?" i said getting ready to walk.

"gee, maybe we should just hitchhike," vern said.

"no way. that sucks," teddy replied as he started walking beside me. the rest followed.

"why not? we could go out route seven to the shiloh church then down back harlow road. we'll be there by sundown."

"that's pussy," teddy replied. i rolled my eyes at his remark.

"hey, it's a long ways."

"did your mother ever have any kids that lived?"

"will you two just shut it already," i said.

later on, we were walking down the tracks in the middle of a field. it already felt like we've been walking forever, but i was having fun.

"have gun will travel, reads the card of a man. a knight without armor in a savage land!" we all sang together. "his fast gun for hire heeds the calling wind. a soldier of fortune is the man called paladin." we stopped singing, but teddy continued.

"we have to fill up at the junkyard. my dad said it's a save well," gordie said.

"not if chopper's there," vern said worriedly. i started to get confused.

"if chopper's there, we'll send you in," chris replied.

"haha, very funny," vern said sarcastically.

"who's chopper?" i asked. chris looked back at me.

"let's just say he's not a very polite dog," he said. i nodded, understanding a little bit more. i guess.

"hey, i'm kinda hungry. who's got the food?" vern asked. as he said this, we all stopped in our tracks.

"oh, shit. did anybody bring anything?" teddy asked, examining all of our faces.
