Chapter 20

Karma

The trinket sparked in my hand again. And again. And again. Like the flint of a lighter attempting to create new life in the heart of a flame.

Its gold center skewed with heat as I traced the layers of rose quartz petals with my eyes. And here I thought I had found the perfect souvenir to give my daughter. In the event that I was ever part of her life to give it to her.

The eerie voice sounded like a whisper over my shoulder, but I knew better. Ehma had made sure of that. After all, more than enough had happened at this point. All I had to do was go with the flow.

The item's name had one of those little i's next to it, and I selected the icon before attempting a response.

Tera's Memento: A divine lotus blossom that collects memories and enables advanced reincarnation* after a time. TIME REMAINING - 0:0:10/2:00:00

*Only effective on deities from the 9th Dimension.

Advanced reincarnation, huh? The similarities between this version of the Interface and a traditional video game's descriptions were jarring. Ehma's little shadow demon had said that Twelf intended things to be comprehensive. Ehma's version, however, had kept things intentionally vague.

Blue flames puttered from underneath the memento's base as my eyes turned away from the countdown and back to the flames engulfing my hand. They swirled far above my head in an upward vortex. The heat from the molten glow was nonexistent, though.

Did Tera die? There wasn't any time to think further on the question. The flames expanded the moment the counter began to blink zero. I panicked.

I acted in self-preservation and edged away as the threshold of flames crept past my outstretched arm. My only thought was to evade another run-in with the flames that had almost burned me alive once. Whether or not the fire was dangerous didn't matter. My mind said it was dangerous, and I reacted by stepping as far away as possible.

Still, I watched. It was beautiful. The trinket floated in the middle of the orange blaze, rotating like a disc on its edge with a wall of translucent light. A tornado of fire. All interwoven around the pink glow of Tera's Memento.

"Well, god damn!"

"God damn is right, you miserable whelp. Now, behold the immensity of my prestige. The power of the sun."

Dramatic much? She hadn't seemed that way, but then again, my interactions with the others had been few and far between. The last syllable of the woman's voice boomed as the vortex of fire collapsed on itself until it was the size of a fist, then it exploded.

The shockwave broke at chest level and parallel to the ground. All I felt was a warm breeze wrap around me as it passed through me instead of knocking me back as expected. As I relaxed from the initial surprise, my eyes locked on the woman before me. I turned immediately.

"Ha, does my beauty enthrall your mortal heart so? It must, but alas, my glory belongs to another."

My eyes dropped to the crystal still gripped in my hand. It was definitely time to go home. I had no idea why every time I allowed myself to think that things had started to get interesting, they got weird instead. I was over it. "Listen. Tera, right? You know that you're naked, right?"

"But of course. Your point?"

Maybe she knew. Maybe what was a problem for me wasn't a problem for her. Either way, she managed to maintain the air of pride in her voice. Would it last after she realized that she looked like a girl a few years from puberty? My suspicion was no. "Can you just put some clothes on? Or make them, or whatever you girls do with magic? Or at least cover up?"
