The forgotten groom

Chapter 7

Max

"Come in" I say
I hear a door closing and footsteps coming closer but I don't look up. I know its him. My husband I last saw three or four years ago in person. I always saw his picture in papers and magazines. The golden boy of business!

Seeing him today was a shock! I don't how I managed to keep calm! I wasn't expecting to see him at all!

How dare he show up to my work like he owned this place! How dare he walk in like he expected the world to kiss his feet.

So yeah, I just had to pretend not to know him.
what would I have said?
Guys, meet Nikolas Starlinksy my husband.
No one knew I was even married! I didn't need the drama that came with Nik following me to this sanctuary of mine.

"What was that outside there?" Nik asks furiously
I expected the anger, so I don't even blink

"What was what?" I ask studying him. He looked good, then again, he always did

"How can you pretend not to know me!" He rails
I look at him quietly

What did he expect? The old max? Its been ten years!

"Answer me, dammit!" He says

I stand up and face him,

"Two things Nik, lower your voice and sit down or leave" I say

He runs his hand through his hair frustratedly and sits down.

"Now, what did you expect? A hug or something? what do you want?" I ask

"I came to see you" he says
I look at him and scoff!

"For what exactly? And why now?" I ask him

"Its your birthday" he says

"So what?" I ask not getting why he was here

"I thought I'd bring my present personally, and we need to talk" he says

"Post it in the mail like you always do and before I forget, I need to talk to you also" I also tell him

He smiles that devastating smile and says,

"Let's go to dinner" he says

"No!" I say

"Why not? Accept or I'll create a scene!" He threatens

Classical Nik! Always trampling down everyone! I didn't need his drama especially at work! Business was good and no one even knew I was married. Things would be better that way.

"Fine, later though, now leave" I say

Later that evening

Nik

"Mum! What happened to Max? How did Max change so much?" I ask

I decided to call my mother because I know she constantly visited him with my sister and dad.

"Ahhh, you've finally met the real Max" she says laughing

"Mum,this isn't a joke,I couldn't recognize him, he was like this other person" I say.
But my mum is quiet for a while then she says,
"Talk to him Nik". Then she hangs up.

Well that was helpful.

Two hours later

I am seated at the table waiting for him. I finally look up and see him being led to the table by a waiter.
He thanks the waiter and comes to our table.

Was Max always this handsome? He was dressed in a black fitted suit with a white shirt. The suit moulded his body to to perfection. It stretched across his shoulder and he just looked too good.

I get up and pull his seat down for him and when he is seated, he looks at me

" Tired?" I ask

"Abit, I've had a long day" he says looking around the restaurant.
I feel a tingle down my spine, he looks good from every side.

"Well, cheer up its your birthday Max" I say

He smiles and my breath catches. He looks so handsome when he smiles.
The waiter brings the menu and I can't help looking at him as he orders.
Then he taps me,

"Nik?" He asks
I snap out of it and order.
As we are eating, I can't help but notice that he slices his food into small pieces before eating.

He catches me staring at him and asks,

"What?"

"Nothing, what did you want to talk about? I ask

"Let's eat first" he says stuffing his mouth with food.

"Okay" I say

Something is definitely up.

We continue eating and I keep stealing glances at him.
When we are done eating and now we are having desert, I can't wait anymore, i need to know

"So, what did you want to tell me? I ask taking his hands in mine.
He looks pretty nervous

"I want a divorce" he says quietly
