Chapter 19

*Nebraska's point of view*

I watched in horror as my lifelong friend gave me a sinister smile. "Now you aren't so keen on hurting me are you?" she asked, sounding so much like Haley. I took in her floral flats, her mint green dress that reached past her knees but exposed her back, and her soft blond hair that was tied in a fishtail braid.

If it weren't for the eyes and how she was looking at me like she wanted to kill me, I could have sworn that it was still my best friend standing in front of me. "Haley?" I asked again, trying to hold back a sob. Please tell me my best friend was still in there...please.

She laughed humorlessly. "Haley? Haley? Wow you sound so pathetic right now. You know, being in her mind, I could see everything you two have been together," she said. I had to keep telling myself that it was Karla talking so I wouldn't do anything that I regret.

"You two have been through a lot together haven't you? It's a shame that Haley isn't here anymore," she said.

"No," I gasped out. I refused to believe that she was dead. There was just no way. My best friend, my rock, my sister, there's no way that she was gone. "You aren't like this, please stop," I whispered.

She rolled her eyes. "You're so stupid. Can't you see? I'm not the girl you used to play dress up with. That girl is gone. Dead. You killed her," she said, walking closer with each word that escaped her mouth.

Each step she took towards me I took one back. "No," I denied. "I know Haley is still in there, I know she's just trapped in her own mind, wanting to escape. I know she's not dead yet!" I cried out.

Haley, or Karla, chuckled. "Sweet, naive little Nebraska. Oh wait, she never calls you Nebraska doesn't she? In fact, she was the one who came up with the nickname Braska for you in second grade."

I held my breath. If the witch really was in Haley's mind, then I know she could make out every embarrassing secret I've told Haley, and trust me there was a lot. "You know nothing of what Haley and I have been through," I told her.

She scoffed. "I could see every memory you two have spent together. Most of it being Haley having to rescue you because you always manage to screw up. Tell me, why is she still your friend?" she asked, putting one hand on her hip.

Don't do it Nebraska, it's a trap. I clenched my fists and took a deep breath.

Suddenly she closed her eyes and took a deep breath before opening them. Instead of the black pits like before, now her eyes were her usual blue color. I smiled thinking that I got my friend back, but then frowned when she began talking.

"Don't you get it Braska? You've always brought me down," she said.

"Haley...what are you talking about?" I asked.

"I never got to enjoy life because I was always running around after you," she said, glaring at me. "I've never got to go to parties because no one wanted to invite you but being nice I always denied the invitation of going without you!" she cried.

"No..." I denied.

"I never got to date anyone because I was always seen walking around with a freak!" she accused, walking closer at a fast rate. I kept walking back.

"Haley-"

"No don't Haley me!" she interrupted, silencing me. "Don't you get it? You ruined my life by existing. You ruined my life by following me around like a lost puppy. You ruined my life by always wanting to hang out with me because you're such a loner that you have no friends!" she sneered.
