So, you have a great character and you're ready to write. And then you realize that you need a backstory. No fear, but fear at the same time because backstory matters. Repeat: BACKSTORY MATTERS. It affects the characters throughout their entire lives, so take it seriously. I'll be delving into life, both super and villains, so let's get started.

Supers

So, there are many cliches in this area so I'll try to go and give you the gist. Steve/Bucky fics in CA: FA : siblings or best friends of the pair, she somehow joins the army, gets captured by HYDRA experimented on and then either stays with Bucky or gets frozen in the ice as well. *sigh* The Wanda and Pietro story line, which can be delved into more with the superpower section. The whole Tony Stark daughter or sister who is insanely smart, is in the car with Tony's parents and gets experimented on when she's little or is with him when he gets captured by the terrorists. The one idea about Pepper having a kid and hiding it from Tony.... The Natasha Romanoff one where she somehow, someway gets freakin' pregnant and then gives the child up (fdajfdak). The whole Bruce Banner plot.....wait, oh.

You can see that there are way so many cliches; and this doesn't mean I'm trying to scare you away from these things, but be original. Have your OC meet Steve/ Bucky at the fair and, well, my brain is stuck for that one. Have your OC volunteer for Strucker's experiment from another family.  Have your OC not be related to Tony Stark or have them not get along with him. You could do the whole long lost sister for Nat, but make it interesting aka avoiding the Red Room.

When you finally have figured that out, move towards the rest of her life. Parents? Friends who aren't Avengers? What do they do in their spare time? If it's a romance, how did the OC and love interest meet? Do they have siblings? Flesh that character out so much that they will be your new best friend and you could easily cover for them.

Villains

You need a villain for your story and you think, "what shall I do?"

Don't fret. Villains are people, or well aliens, but they are living creatures who had a past that made them who they are now. To get you started, here are some questions to try out:

1. Why are they a villain, what made them this? Was their childhood bad?

2. What would the villain just love and would melt over? Villains ARE NOT ALL EVIL (at least in the MCU). They have some sort of grudge or their out for revenge, or their misunderstood. They could think that they're the good guys!

3. Are they there just to push the plot along or will they actually affect the OC and book? If you answered yes for the first one, think again.

4. Are they the good Marvel villain or bad Marvel villain? What I mean by this is, all Marvel villains are like the main character, but they chose evil instead of good. Now, whether you got a Ivan Antonovich Vanko, or a Kilmonger is your choice.

5. Can they outwit the OC, meaning, are they really stupid or actually smart? Don't make them do stupid mistakes. It's like in horror movies when the characters go trooping right into a trap. Don't make them do this, it's just bad.
