It had gone just like they had planned; when they reached the end of the tunnel, there was a stairs leading upward, to the world above the underground. They came up in some thicket, behind the old structure of an abandoned stable. They pulled the hoods over their heads, in case any guards were watching, and met Blake a bit further up the road. He was smiling to see them and gave June a kiss goodbye.

After that came travelling. Terrance took the reins and drove the anxious horse far away from the city they escaped from. Maya sat next to him on the driver’s box while June had taken a spot in the back, looking at Dew that shrank away in the distance until it was completely gone.

They followed the north-west road for hours, going straight through the forest. Every so often, they met others going to and from Dew. Never though, did they see guards or soldiers. Terrance was convinced they had escaped without any complications.

“All we have to do now is get to Foxjump Rock,” he said. “Do the deal and be done for it. After that, we can go anywhere we please.”

Maya seemed excited, but June was less so. She still wasn’t sure if she should go with Terrance, or head for the palace. She missed the security of knowing exactly what to do, that she was going to get married to the prince. She missed him.

Terrance didn’t ask her about her plans. He didn’t say anything about last night either—she suspected he was a bit upset that she didn’t want to go with him. She liked him, of course, but…

Her mind trailed to the deal with Mr. Evangely he had made. He was going to sell something that could save lives to evil. She didn’t like it, and wished that he would not do it. He had the herbs with him right now, they were in a little pouch he carried around his neck. Maya had sniffed at them earlier, June had noticed them even though Terrance had tried to keep them out of sight—he didn’t want her to know where they were, in case she might try something.

She had tried convincing him not to make the deal already, but that hadn’t worked. Terrance was decided, and so was Maya; tail-wagging, she claimed it was the best to give those stinky plants to Mr. Evangely.

“June, I am no hero,” he said. “If you want a hero, you should have stayed in the dungeon, with Roy. He is willing to lay his life on the line, fighting evil. I am not. I’d rather live it.”

“But… what you’re doing, it’s wrong.” Couldn’t he see that? All her life, she had been taught to separate right from wrong, and making deals with the Devil certainly wasn’t right. Condemning other people with it—that was wrong.

He shrugged. “I have been in many arguments about morality, and there hasn’t been anyone I met that hasn’t questioned mine. But I tell you, June: this is me. This is what I am going to do.”

“But what about the people that will suffer from it?”

“What about Maya? If I don’t do this, what do you think will happen to her? I am the only one to protect her… I may do bad things, but at least I am doing them for the right reasons.”
