13. Gone

Waking up was always a pain. Waking up after you had a bullet go inside and then out of you, was worse. But Jared's thoughts were reeling around the physical pain. It was the emotional pain that left him gasping.

How could he?

To his parents, to Ali.

"Ali..." he murmured, knowing that he had to get to her. He had to explain. Tell her that he remembered. And maybe, for the last time, tell her he loves her more than words know.

"She's gone," his eyes zoned in to the doctor - the same one from a few weeks ago, when he had finally woken up from his coma: Doctor Lyngard. "I'm sorry"

"When?" Jared managed to croak out.

"Seven hours ago. She was rushed to the mainlands hospital after she dropped to the ground, bleeding heavily from the gunshot," seeing Jared's confusion, the doctor explained, "The bullet cut in half when Ali intercepted. It hit the frame of the chandelier, before getting refracted and hitting you in the stomach. That was one half. The other half collided into her when she was pushed out of the way." Lyngard laughed sadly, "Things like this rarely happen. When they do, it's just plain crazy"

But Jared wasn't listening.

He couldn't.

Not over the deafening sound of his heart as it broke.
