Don't think I'm a bad person for hating Rick, I've just never trusted my Mothers boyfriends in the past. So why would he be any different? Every time Mom would bring home a guy for us to meet, we'd finally get comfortable with him and he'd end up hurting Mom and us, her kids. Everyone that came into our lives involving my mom eventually left.
We pulled into the Olive Garden parking lot and got out of the car. I watched Blake get Skylar out of her car seat.
"Thank You sir Blake. "She curtsied.
"Any time madam." He bowed in response to her curtsy.
I giggled at that and followed them in side. I kept poking Skylar and would hide behind Blake to make it seem like I didn't do anything. "You know I see you!" She laughed
"Hmmm?" I acted as if I didn't know what she's talking about.
I looked ahead and saw Mom and Rick swallowing each others mouths. Ew.
I shouldn't be talking though after what happened 20 minutes ago.
Connor...
That moved a little faster than I had thought, well a lot faster than I had thought, would happen. The last time something like that happened to me when I was dating Cameron. Mine and his story is simple and didn't end well of course, like most relationships. We met at volleyball tryouts our freshman year. One day he kissed me under the bleachers before I was being put in for a game and when I went in, I couldn't focus. I had just served and when they hit it back, it went right in front of me. None of my teammates were standing there so I dived to hit it. Needless to say...I broke my ankle. He visited me at the hospital later that day and brought me flowers. We were together up until winter, our junior year when I found out he cheated on me with my best friend, Jennifer. EX best friend now.
We went inside and were surprisingly, immediately seated.
We sat down and everyone scammed threw the menu to see what they wanted. Skylar was too busy coloring the kids menu they gave her. I already knew what I wanted.
I could her my Mother and Rick whispering unspeakable things to each other. Ugh.
Yea I knew what I wanted, to get the hell out.
The waitress eventually came and we all ordered. I texted Claudia under the table but put it away when our food came. I ordered the manicotti and immediately started devouring it. Mom was saying whatever about how much her and Rick are in love. I didn't bother to listen, I know it won't last.
"So with that said......Rick is moving in!"
I nearly choked on my manicotti.
My eyes were wide and when I turned to look at Skylar and Blake, they were smiling and looked...almost excited. What?
"You know I was hoping something else would happen too." Rick intervened. He got off of the chair.
What are you doing?
He got down on one knee.
Get back up Rick.
He took my Mom's hand.
Oh dear god.
"Melissa, would you do the honor in taking my hand in marriage?"
No. No. No. No. No. Not all of this in one night.
"Yes!" My Mother shrieked in joy. He picked up my Mom and spun her around in his arms. The whole restaurant cheered.
Me on the other hand. I couldn't breath, I couldn't even move. I made myself though. I couldn't stand to watch my life crumble right in front of me. I got up from the table and ran to the front doors. I looked back to see if anyone noticed I had left. No one flinched. I pushed straight through the doors and ran to the back of the building outside. I felt the tears coming but I pushed them back. I felt like someone had just punched a whole in my stomach and cut open my throat all at the same time, but yet, I mostly felt numb. I sat down on the asphalt and laid my head back. I replayed everything that had just happened, wishing it would go away. But I knew I couldn't wish this away, this was entirely real. I had so many feelings right now, I had to talk to someone. No one back in there. Without thinking I pulled out my phone. I started dialing letters.
D-"You know he won't answer." My mind argued against me.
A-"Why are you even trying?"
D-"Fine. Suit yourself."
Dad popped up on the screen. I took a deep breath and pressed call.
Ring...ring...ring...ring...."You have reached the Sprint voicemail box of- Andrew Taylor"
Beep
"Hi Dad, um, it's your little princess. Brookey." Oh no, here come the tears, I could feel them swelling up in my eyes again.
"Look, I don't know if you really care or even want to talk to me since you never do anyway, but I really need someone to talk to." I closed my eyes and let the tears roll down my cheeks, dropping into my skirt. "So could you just maybe answer your fucking phone for once!" I was talking through gasps of air, trying not to start balling my eyes out. Even though I was halfway there. "Skylar misses you. So if you don't want to call for my sake, than call for hers. Bye." I hung up and dropped my phone onto the ground. I put my head in my hands and just let it all out. I kept telling myself.
Let it go, let it go.
But I couldn't.
I heard footsteps coming by so I scooted myself into the shadows so I wasn't noticed. My sobs echoed so I tried to stop. That only made it worse and louder.
"Excuse me, are you alright miss? Wait...Brooke?"
I looked up to see a tall boy with a Oak Lawn Community High School volleyball team hoodie. The hood was covering his face so I couldn't see who it was, but the soft, kind voice was familiar. The boy knelt down and pushed off his hood, revealing his face.
"Cameron?"
