13: Bastards

Time seemed to freeze. I know my heart certainly seemed to when I caught sight of him, doing that twinge that made me want to slap a hand to my chest as a way of scolding myself for feeling something when my eyes fell onto him.

His hands were buried in the pockets of his jeans; his shoulders hunched forward a little bit as he awkwardly slouched against the wall. The sunlight that streamed in through the window glinted off his chestnut coloured hair, shiny and soft, and I could recall just how lovely it had been to run my hands through.

God, I groaned internally. Keep your thoughts to yourself, Nova. You're engaged, woman.

'You can't just barge in here, you thug.' Laina said from where she was stood, her hands on her hips and looking as if she wanted to strangle him with his scarf, about which she remarked a split second later, 'And your scarf looks dumb, too.'

Her voice yanked me out of my blank thoughts, and I shook my head, blinking heavily as if it'd get the image of Connor out of it permanently.

I glanced around, seeing my parents and Mia were there too, dotted uncomfortably through the room. My dad looked awkwardly from the window to the wall, from the ceiling to the floor, seemingly wanting to be anywhere but here. Mum had her arms folded, lips pursed and her foot tapping, quiet as it was, gave me the biggest migraine in the world.

I didn't even look at Mia, because everything was falling into place and making sense now. I realised that the bastards hadn't been able to keep their mouths shut, despite what I had told them over the phone. I was a moron - an idiot, an imbecile, for believing that if I admitted that I was pregnant, Mia and Connor would stay quiet and just leave me be. Drew had insisted that they wouldn't sell us out, and he couldn't have been more wrong.

'Bloody hell, if I had known it was going to practically be a flipping family reunion, I would have made a three course meal or something,' I mumbled, mainly to Laina who subtly tried to shift in order to shield the bottle of Jack that she had brought over earlier from view. The movement attracted Mia's attention though, and her eyebrows practically disappeared into her hair when she caught sight of the drink bottle, they were raised that high.

'Jesus, Nova, you're being bloody responsible, aren't you?' Mia said sarcastically, to the confusion of everyone my parents and Connor.

Laina scowled at her. Slowly she picked the offending drink up, unscrewing the top and swigging straight from the bottle deliberately, showcasing it in Mia's face spitefully. 'Nova's not been drinking it, you twit,' Laina said with a glare, and her sass made me want to smile but I knew that would have just been plain inappropriate at a time like this. 'I brought it over because I knew I would need a drink to get through this whole undoubtedly shit saga if I was going to be here and support Nova. Unlike you, Mia. You're a fuc-'

'Hey, that's my wife you're talking to like that,' Connor cut in, frowning at Laina who honestly couldn't care less.

'If you and your beloved wife were worth my respect, I would give it. Instead, you're just a pair of adulterers that can't seem to leave flipping Nova alone. It's honestly just really fucking weird,' Laina said frankly.
