CHAPTER 2

THE NEXT DAY

RUBY

"Hey Lynn, can you check out for me?" I shouted all the way from the door.

"Yeah okay! Oh, and, I'll be coming over tonight." She shouted all the way from the back of the bookstore.

"Great, see you later!" I grabbed my jacket and left the bookstore. Shelly's Bookstore, was where I worked at with one of my best friends, Lynn Quinn.

I walked down the sidewalk of the town. There was a reason why they named the town Dark Woods. It was because the woods at night are really dark. The beach was right in front of the town. There were little shops which I found cute.

I knew everyone and everyone knew me. The only person who I didn't talk to was Elliot Evergreen. The first and last time was in junior's year Halloween dance. It was such a sad night as I remembered. I got so worried for him. It was a shocker for everyone to see him the very next day. He looked so...different. He looked so attractive with his mysterious looks. He was very breathtaking in my opinion.

His bright cold blue colored eyes made any girl swoon. His eyes went perfectly with his almost black colored hair. He had a fit body. His charming smile gave him the power to have anything he wanted. His mysterious personality made you so curious about him.

I had a little secret crush on him, just like all the other girls in this town. Sadly, his whole family died in a fire accident. No one knew who started the fire. But, I do remember his mother and father. They were nice people although, his brother wasn't.

Caleb Evergreen looked nothing like his older brother. He had the blonde hair with brown eyes. There were rumors saying that Caleb was adopted. Their mother strongly denied that rumor claiming that he wasn't adopted.

I knew Lynn was still best friends with Elliot, which left me somewhat of a chance to talk to him. But, he wouldn't want to talk to me either way. I wasn't exactly girlfriend material.

I walked into the porch of my house and get out my keys. I opened the door with my house key and entered. I find my brother and my best friend fighting like always. Both of them were standing in front of each other in the living room. It looked like if they were about to charge into battle, but luckily, I came to the rescue.

"You ate my cookies!" Lauren shouted at my brother who was smiling like a fool.

Lauren Hood is my best friend who I lived with. She had the almost blonde hair with hazel eyes. She had the perfect body that very girl wanted. She was a bitch to the heart, and always fighting with my brother. Everything in her closet is pink and her undergarments are pink. Then came Max Summers, my brother was kind of an asshole and sometimes funny. He had the wavy hair and the chocolate color eyes like mine. He hated Lauren, I didn't know why. I found it very confusing and rather push it away.

"Why would I eat your nasty cookies? I hate peanut butter cookies!" Max did a full 360 turn to face me. "Ruby, don't I hate peanut butter cookies?"

"Well, I did see you eating them last night." I shyly accused him with a small smile. Max gave me a hurtful look while Lauren's was like if she had just won an Oscar.

"I knew it!"

How can I live with them? Lauren and I were best fiends since pre-school. Our friendship started by me sharing my animal crackers with her, because her mom had forgotten to pack her daily snack. My brother was my brother, so I guess he had an exception. I walked upstairs leaving my brother and Lauren shouting to each other. I entered my room, taking off my jacket and shoes. I put on my cute pink bunny slippers and put my hair in a bun. Once, I got out of my room again, I hear the two idiots screaming at each other.
