|| Chapter Fourteen ||

“No.” The word escaped my mouth on instinct and I had no control over it. I knew that I wouldn’t be able to help him no matter how many reasons he gave me. Daniel was my mate and, after a mental calculation in my head, I realised that his death would just affect me. I didn’t want to be a second Mrs. Perry, distressed over her long gone mate, except that it would feel a hundred times worth because the guilt and shame of participating in killing my own mate would haunt me.

Drew seemed to be astonished by my response because his mouth fell open, his eyes were wide as saucers and he looked about ready to snap my neck in half. After getting over the shock, he whispered, “What?”

My heartbeat sped uncontrollably as I comprehended in the situation I had, once again, dragged myself in. This rogue could kill me in a second and we both knew it, so angering him or getting on his wrong side was probably the worst idea right now. Nevertheless, what he was requesting from me wasn’t something small because he was asking me to kill. To take away a soul and if that wasn’t persuasive enough, it was my mate, the only guy I was made for, that he focused on.

“I said no.” I repeated for him trying to look brave.

“Rosalynn Richards.” how he knew my full name, I had no idea. “Do you comprehend what you’re saying?”

“Yes.” I nodded.

He shook his head and sighed. The bright yellow of his eyes hadn’t once dissolved into the natural brown. I could tell he was losing it and that I needed to get out of here before he does something that hurts, or worse, kills me. “Are you out of your mind?” He shouted, anger radiating off of him like fumes. His mouth was shaped in a disgusted manner which, I concluded, was directed at me. “Do you understand what you’re not accepting here?”

I looked away, scared. He was definitely losing his once collected temper and was about to burst. I could just feel the resentment and revulsion rabidly flying my way. I could see the sharp claws that managed to freely escape and become visible. Biting my lips, I readied myself to be excused from this scene when he interrupted.

“Do you not understand that all those vulnerable lives that are at stake of being taken away by your so called mate could be saved if we help?” He growled, moving closer to me. His was breathing heavily while his hands were clutched so tightly that his knuckles were turning white. “Get over him.”

“I-I can’t help you kill him,” I stuttered nervously, twisting my fingers together in order to keep myself from running away and have him chase me. I can’t get over him either, I thought.

He laughed, shaking his head at my reply. “You’re not going to help us kill him.” he took a deep breath after he finished his laughter. “I just want you to lead us to him, that’s all. The rest is on me and all the other rogues.” He smiled.

I furrowed my eyebrows perplexed by his sudden explanation. “What…what do you mean lead you to him?”

He turned to face the forest behind him, taking in the sun which was starting to set creating a beautiful sight above us in the sky. “Collins, no matter how you try, will slip through your fingers. He’s like a...” He stopped trying to describe to me with his hand gestures what Daniel was like. “He’s like a…a liquid or something. He will escape no matter what you do to him.” He shook his head in frustration. “But, there is one person who can help us catch him without failing.” He swiveled his head to face me, as if I’m the ‘one person’ he was describing.

This was too much for me; he was proving himself to me by explaining his point of view. Daniel was evil and that was the truth that no one could deny. On the other hand, I couldn’t just betray Daniel like that. Even though he never said it, I knew he trusted me. It only explained why he was helping me fight better knowing that I won’t hurt him. Or maybe he thought I was too weak to hurt him…now that was something I never thought about.
