FLASHBACK

"So, Nix who's this mystery person you've been texting nonstop?" My dad asked, taking a drink from his coffee cup. I was home on Christmas break, and Adam had been giving me a play by play of the hilarious awkwardness that was happening at his family's party. I couldn't conceal my giggles.

But I wasn't prepared to answer that question just yet..

"Um," I glanced up from my phone, watching my parents eagerly awaiting.

"Uh, just this...guy. I met him during the fashion thing a couple months ago and we've been talking since then, I guess."

"Well, it's about time," said my mother with a wink and a smile.

"Oh, um, it's not like that-" I stammered.

"What do you mean? Phoenix Bay Barrow, don't you tell me this was just a one night-"

"Mo-om! Hush! No, not like that!" I interrupted, blushing bright red. Don't even think about it, Nix. Your face will give it away!

"Then what is it? Have you been friendzoned this quickly?"

"Not exactly..."

My phone buzzed and I looked down to see a picture from Adam, and under it he had written: 'there's always a drunk uncle!'

I snorted, presumably Adam's uncle was passed out in a chair, a bottle in hand and a dreamy smile on his face, a tiny white dog in his lap.

"Nix?"

With a sigh, I rubbed my nose and looked up. "Okay, okay! I met... okay, so here's the thing, his name is..."

"Oh my word, say it already!" Dad said.

"His name is Adam. Lambert."

My parents stared at me as if I'd said some foul word that took them by surprise.

"Adam...that gay boy from the singing show? With the weird hair?" My mom asked, none too gently.

I bit back my retort of contempt that she speak like that about my...friend.

"Yes," I said coolly. "That Adam Lambert."

"Honey, are you sure? He isn't some impostor or anything is he?"

"No, you guys. He's the real deal, trust me. I've been close enough before to know if it was him or not."

I would soon come to regret that day, even though it was something that had to happen eventually, but boy, did it backfire quickly.

The expressions on my parents' faces made me shift uncomfortably, my phone clutched tight in my hand, really wishing Adam would stop texting me for just a moment. Never thought I would ever say that before.

My parents were homophobes, basically. They wouldn't want to call themselves that, but it's what it was.

I knew it was what would cause the rift we were currently slipping into.

"Nix, I don't know if being 'friends' with someone like that is such a good idea."

"And last time I checked you don't get to chose my friends for me. Adam is my friend. Maybe we won't be friends forever, but right now this is how it is." My voice wasn't as strong as my words were, and I lifted my chin up and looked them both in the eye. "You aren't giving Adam a chance, he's an amazing person. He's so kind and thoughtful, not to mention talented. I thought you guys of all people would be impressed by him. He has worked harder than anyone I've ever met to get where he is now-he wasn't just handed this!"
