A Plea for our Literary Heritage

I thought I'd write a poem,

And most of you should know,

It won't have the emotion,

That many poets show,

It's aim, it's goal, it's purpose,

Is to present unto your ears,

That the greatest works of poetry,

Come from right across the years.

There's Keats , there's Poe, there's Milton,

Tennyson and Byron too,

There's Wordsworth and there's Eliot,

Just to name a few,

They've inspired generations,

With verse so true to heart,

They've touched us and they've moved us,

Even encouraged us to start.

The greatest of our poets,

Have fallen out of taste,

Don't let their greatest efforts,

Go forgotten and to waste,

Be inspired, touched and moved by them,

As generations past,

And then perhaps it falls to you,

To write something that lasts.

So think of our old friends next time,

You are keen to sit a read,

For one can learn alot from them,

It's what society needs,

Take up a book of poetry,

Of verses from every land,

Be absorbed, consumed, inspired by them,

Let them take you by the hand!
