Silhouette

What is that behind the shadow?

That silhouette by the window

That figure before the mirror

Does it frighten you with horror?

Do you hear that strange hollow sound?

It comes from somewhere but is never found

Maybe it’s just a widow’s mournful cry

Or maybe the wind’s cold and heavy sigh

Who’s that in the shadow again?

Do you think it’s a long lost kin?

Maybe it’s just the oak bed post

Mistaken to be someone’s ghost

Would you go near that dark stature?

To behold its hidden feature

Take a breath and a step closer

Stay calm, don’t freeze, and don’t hinder

The shadow dances around your hand

Look down and watch it from where you stand
