Chapter 14

"Eh?"

By the time Mayumi opened her shoe locker, she found a letter lay just above her shoes.

What is it? Wondered Mayumi, then she took the letter and opened it.

As she read the contents realization struck her.

"It's a letter of challenge!"
Mayumi murmured in surprise though it was still barely audible.

"Did something happened?"
Haruhi appeared, already wearing her indoor shoes. She somewhat heard Mayumi murmur something but was not able to catch it which caused her to ask if something happened.

Mayumi hid the letter inside her pocket, turned to Haruhi and waved her hands smiling goofily

"It's nothing! Nothing at all!"

She then took her shoes off and wore her indoor ones.

"Let's go already!"

Haruhi stared at Mayumi suspiciously before mumbling an "Okay then....." And followed behind Mayumi since she went ahead of her.

She's definitely hiding something... Haruhi suspected, I guess she'll tell it to me.... Someday... I hope. as she at the same time hoped secretly.

They then arrived at their class and the day progressed smoothly like normally.

As time pass, before realizing it, All their classes have already ended and it's time for them to go home. Mayumi nodded at herself seemingly assured that everything would go well.

"Ehm... Haruhi, I'll go to the comfort room for awhile"

"Sure. Go on"

Thankfully, Haruhi isn't one of those people who accompanies their friends to the comfort room unless being asked thus making Mayumi confident in her excuse.

She hurriedly ran along and went down the stairs and towards the school courtyard.

A boy was located waiting under a fully grown tree, Mayumi being sure that this is the one who sent her that letter.

She approached the man confident that she can defeat him whatever the challenge may be.

"Uh... Kataoka Yousuke.... Right?"

Mayumi asked seemingly unsure as she read the back envelope of the letter.

The boy nodded, he looked flustered and what more is that he's beet red making Mayumi wonder if the man on question is sick.

"Uhm!"

The boy shouted so suddenly that it startled Mayumi. Mayumi then tuned in for the boys next words, tho they ended up with a bunch of stuttering.

"Uh... Ehm, well... Y-You see... The-The thing is..."

"Huh?"

Mayumi got confused, is the boy so nervous that he couldn't even declare the challenge he had for Mayumi? Then why did he send a challenge if he couldn't even do it?

"The thing is!!!"

The boy shouted once again but now, he gulped loudly ready to spout out his next words.

"I like you!!! P-Please go out with me!!!"

It took a while for Mayumi to process what the boy just said, and when she finally realized, she was left dumbfounded.

It wasn't a letter of challenge, it was a love letter, realization hit Mayumi.

But Mayumi knows her answer for this one.

She smiled at the boy but rather than her usual bright smile, she showed him a rare side of hers. She smiled at him with sadness in her eyes.

"I'm sorry, I can't go out with you."

She said resolute to her decision.

The boy slumped in defeat seemingly prepared for it from the start but is still disappointed.

"I knew it.... You barely even know me"

The boy muttered, disappointment heard in each of the words.

"No No No! That's not it! Well, I guess that's part of it but that isn't the main reason!"

Mayumi said in a hurry right after hearing the words that the boy, Kataoka Yousuke said.

"Eh?"

Yousuke tilted his head questioning what Mayumi had meant by that.

"Well, ya see... I actually have someone I love and I don't plan to give up"

"Oh"

Was the only thing the boy was able to say widening his eyes.

"I didn't realize for Shinomiya-san to like someone"

"Love" Mayumi corrected

"Uh, right, Love someone... What a lucky person, you must really cherish him right?"

Him...... Well, Mayumi let it slide and shrugged nonchalantly.

"That's obvious"
Mayumi stated.

A few seconds of silence have passed then the boy once again initiated the talk.

"But we can be friends right?"

Mayumi smiled brightly and nodded her head saying "Of course!"

Then Mayumi saw that the boy has a wristwatch, she asked for the time and he just answered without a care for the world that more than five minutes have passed since he confessed, this made Mayumi stare in shock to Yousuke.

"I gotta go now! Sorry!"

Mayumi ran inside the school building not waiting for what Yousuke have to say. This left him speechless, shocked to say wondering what might be the case.

Mayumi ran hurriedly inside the classroom where she left Haruhi waiting.

As she slid the door open, she sighed in relief seeing that Haruhi still didn't leave.

"You're late"

Haruhi said obviously angry making Mayumi laugh her usual laugh scratching the back of her neck.

"Hehehe, Took a long one, sorry"

Haruhi sighed, took her bag and headed towards the door.

"Then let's go now"

Mayumi smiled, took her bag and throttled behind Haruhi saying "sure, sure"
