Chapter 8:

A knock on the door interrupted Jade’s failed attempt to sleep. She felt the intoxicatingly addictive scent of Donovan behind the door and the mouth-watering smell of steak and vegetables. The previous day she would have ignored him, but she hadn’t had lunch and hadn’t had any snack either and her stomach was practically consuming itself.

When she opened the door Jade was greeted with a sight she wasn’t expecting. Donovan stood in front of her with a different expression than the one he had the previous day. It wasn’t the frown he always wore, but a calmed and relaxed expression as he looked down at her eyes with his stunning baby blues.

“I know you’d probably rather sleep, but you’ve skipped lunch. I thought you might be hungry” He explained sounding awkward. Jade wanted to laugh out loud at him being uncomfortable yet she didn’t want to change his current mood, yet she felt her cheeks warm at the thought of him being so considerate.

“Thanks” She took the plate and glass from his hands, and stared back at his hypnotic eyes. How come she’d never noticed they were so beautifully colored?

“Macy said she’d be here with Volk around 10”

“Ok”

“…Goodnight” Donovan mumbled, making no move to leave from his spot.

“G’night”

Surprisingly, his hand rose almost reluctantly and briefly took her chin between his index and his thumb, caressing it with an expression that stunned Jade. Unfortunately by the time his gesture sank in, he had already dashed out towards the stairs and was midway down.

Jade didn’t stop him.

The next morning Jade was up hours before 10 am, and several minutes before the sun even rose. Not that it was going to be visible through the awful mid-October grey sky that had been pouring down water since she’d began watching at around 6 am, anyway. Jade was sitting on the steps leading towards the spacious garden behind Donovan’s house, hugging her knees, safely under the back porch so she didn’t get wet. The soothingly beautiful sound of Chris Martin’s voice singing the lyrics of one of her favorite songs, Paradise, through her headphones (which she thankfully had attached to her ipod in her purse) covered the sound of the drops of rain falling heavily on the grass. And she couldn’t help but think how accurate the lyrics of said song were. Yes, she was dreaming of paradise, and indeed was underneath stormy skies thinking the sun was set to rise.It was ridiculous how Fate was mocking her right now through the shuffle of her music device.

Right when the song changed into the soft riff of The Only Exception, another song perfectly acceptable for the melancholic mood Jade was in for no apparent reason -or at least no reason she wanted to acknowledge- she felt the distinctive scent of her mate, stronger than the usual faint trace she now found completely normal, part of the air she breathed. Jade also sensed his eyes on her which, disturbingly, she didn’t find uncomfortable anymore, and wondered if she should ignore him or talk to him. Without realizing it, her own fingers lightly skimmed her chin, trying to replay the touch that had felt so heavenly. It was crazy- He merely touched her and Jade was already fantasizing about it.

The need to change the song was too strong, so she gave in and pressed the forward button of the white circle.  That particular song perfectly described memories of her family that were just too much in that moment, and it was also charged with meaning now that Jade met Donovan. However, Jade’s thoughts instantly took another direction as lyrics of INXS’ Need You Tonight came from her headphones. Oh God, she just couldn’t help but close her eyes and visualize Donovan’s body, only clad in a pair of dark jeans that hung low on his hips, his incredibly sculpted and ink muscles bare for her to see and those unsmiling baby blue eyes darkened in lust.
