Niccolo's Chocolate House

Chapter 16

*Nick*

I watched closely as my new wife warmly embraced the only other witness present at the event. It was obvious enough that the woman was her best friend because they were practically inseparable before we exchanged vows and even now as I leaned against the sleek black jaguar which came with the driver.

I shouldn't have been looking her way, but could I be blamed? She was a vision, my goddess, even more beautiful than she had been before. Maybe I was biased? Maybe it had something to do with the fact that she was now my wife? Maybe the fact that she was now mine. Maybe that compounded it? Either way, I would've been a fool not to look at her by the way she looked now.

I studied the pair as they descended the steep flight of steps to the idle sidewalk below, Ada wiping her eyes and I worried that something may have upset her only to realize that she'd been laughing so hard at something the woman said that she'd been brought to tears.

If only, I had that effect on her. If only, I could make her laugh like that ... to the point of tears. To elicit that rare dazzling smile of hers. All would be right with my world.

Ada hugged her friend once more before approaching the vehicle as the driver opened the door for her, never once looking my way as she slid inside though I was certain she knew from the intensity of my gaze. I studied the driver to see him acknowledge her by a curt nod of the head before he turned to me.

I was about to follow suit when the best friend approached me. She asked if she could have a brief word with me. It seemed harmless enough so I nodded before I noticed a door shutting distantly as I obliged her, moving out of an earshot to join her. Her face was void of all humour, I realized in contrast to the way she literally lit up when she'd been in deep conversation with my wife. "Problemi?"

"Listen closely, Mister. Dari might quite possibly be the sweetest girl in the world. She's my best friend and her feelings run deep as the love we share, deeper than the surface. You may be her husband, but you have a sister also. You should have some idea as to how we love so if you hurt her, ever ... I don't care who you are or where you're from, it won't be that an easy debt to pay. I will hurt you. Capiche?"

I could tell by the look on her face that she meant business that her words were the furthest from a bluff. I admired that she would stand up for her friend, Ada, especially if she didn't herself. It showed character among other things, also that her word was one she didn't take lightly. It was good that Ada had a friend who genuinely cared for her. Good friends were in short supply as of late, I should know.

"Perfettamente," I smiled, appreciating her concern despite her threat.

"Once we fully understand each other, we will be good friends." She supplied, allowing a smile to creep onto her face. "Have a good day, Mr. Casimiro."
