In a Primordial age, our ancestors
looked towards the sky,
felt the angst of eternity,
the great mystery of the stars, moon and sun.
Something deep inside answered
the vision with a profundity,
that great question: What? How? Why?
The answer was dissembled
through many ages,
perhaps two hundred thousand,
perhaps a million years or more.
For human kind to achieve Absolution
an Almighty God manifested itself
from the very earliest times.
The Matriarcal societies
sacrificing the Male Royal heir
in the annual rite of Spring.
The mighty, only too human,
Gods of Olympus, now dead and buried,
beneath a weight of white gleaming marble.
Then the God’s of ‘The Book,’ Muslim, Christian, Jew,
to whom we seek forgiveness,
‘Almighty God, our heavenly Father,
who of his great mercy
hath promised forgiveness of sins...’
Then the science of Dawkins and Hawkins
who love to tell us how, but not the reason why.
Which leads us back to gazing at the sky
asking that same question, that primordial cry of why?
