Chapter 3 – It’s all Joe

Once again it was time for lunch. My wish was to find Jace and get that freaking burger he owed me. The thought of a burger was just mouthwatering. Damn, I was hungry. I made my to cafeteria and waved to George and Jenna who were already sitting at the table. I wondered where Joe was.

I saw Jace in the line and went to stand next to him. He didn’t seem surprised at all. Did he remember me? Wow, in that case, he has super memory if he remember the weird people.

“Hey, Madison,” he greeted me and stepped forward like the rest of the students in line. I did the same. “Ready to get that burger?”

“Yeah,” I nodded. A smile found its way to my lips. “I’m glad you remembered it.” Finally it was his turn to pay and I got my sweet delicious burger. I headed to the table and landed next to Jenna. We usually sat like that, boys on one side and the girls on the other.

“Yo, where’s Joe?” George immediately asked.

“Damn, let the girl sit down first,” I rolled my eyes and took a sip from his drink. “I’ve no idea.”

“Hey, that’s mine!” George whined and I gestured.

“Boo hoo, who cares, I was thirsty,” I snapped back. Gotta love our relationship. Without Jenna and Joe, I think we’d probably be dead already. We are like frenemies, but a little bit closer. George is very like my brother I never had. “So, did you went to the movies, Jenna?” I started eating my burger. It felt good. Last night I had called her and cancelled our plans.

“No, I decided to stay home,” she shook her head. “How were things with Joe?” She changed her tone and looked at me with piercing eyes. I grimaced and swallowed my bite.

“It was…fun,” I said. Damn, Madison, you really should improve your acting skills, I thought to myself.

“Oh no, what happened?” Jenna asked becoming severe. I frowned and shook my head, repeating ‘nothing’.

“Madi and Joe, sitting in a tree, K-I-S-S-I-N-Geez, you don’t have to hit me, woman!” George rubbed his shoulder and dropped his eyes, afraid to look at me. I smirked, proud of what I had done and took another bite from my burger. Then Joe appeared with that same girl from yesterday. I breathed out and rolled my eyes.

“Who was that?” Jenna whispered to Joe, staring at the girl standing in the line. “Some girlfriend of yours?”

“You say it like I have loads of,” Joe chuckled and gulped some juice down his throat. I bit my lip, eyes down, so I didn’t have to face my best friend. Was I jealous? The more I thought about it, the more I started to believe it, but I didn’t like Joe like that, only as my best friend and almost-soulmate.

“Well, do you?” George joined in, eyebrow raised. He had a smirk on his lips. We all knew he was messing with Joe. “I mean, not that I think it’s bad.” George threw his hands up in surrender. “Go ahead, Casanova.”

“I am not Casanova. Jeez, I barely talk to girls.” He sighed and grabbed the sandwich which he started to eat eagerly. He didn’t have to be Casanova, girls already liked him. That nerdy look he had, it drew girls to him. Plus the fact he was single, it made every chick go nuts. And since bad boys weren’t in their league, Joe was a catch.

“Howard Temple,” Jenna mumbled and took a bite from her salad. Just that moment a boy with black hair and a pierced eyebrow passed us. He was dressed in black. Completely colourless. I glanced at him for a brief moment and then returned to stare at the table. “Wonder what he’s up now.”
