The REAL reason England had no troops behind him in the revolutionary war scene is that he came to talk to Alfred alone to discuss peaceful ways to deal with it. However Alfred thinking it was a trap brought a few of his men anyway even though Britain did not.
The evidence? Look at England's face, he looks confused and hurt. If he intended to fight, even if it was alone he wouldn't look so confused and hurt.
