Chapter Seven

Like a normal guy, Sam doesn't get around to calling me until Tuesday just before I'm getting ready for bed. He hardly looked at me yesterday or today in Biology, I must've really pissed him off. And for some strange reason, I feel kind of bad for doing so. I don't know why I do the things I do. I know when I'm doing them that I'm probably pushing somebody's buttons, or taking it too far, but I can't stop.

"Brittany?" Sam's voice says loudly through the speaker of my iPhone.

I cough, finding my voice. "Sorry, hey Sam," I finally get out. I don't know what to say, I feel kind of nervous, worried that I might make him mad again. Actually I don't think that I made him mad, Saturday night, he had more of a disappointed expression on his face. Which is even worse.

"Are you okay?" he chuckles. "Did I get you at a bad time or something?"

"I was just getting ready to go to bed."

"Oh, she actually sleeps?" he teases.

I giggle. "Occasionally," I joke, falling back on my bed. "So what's up?"

"I was wondering if you wanted to get together after my baseball practice tomorrow so I can help you study for that bio quiz on Thursday," he speaks quickly.

I let my eyes wander all over my room, trying to think up a normal response. "Yeah, sure," I pause. "Where at? Do you mind if we don't do it at my house?"

"Why not?"

I take a deep breath. "Well, Brian doesn't want me hanging around you because I'm such a...person who expresses herself differently," I laugh, using his words.

I expect Sam to laugh, but he doesn't. "He called you the other term, didn't he?" he asks.

"He didn't have to," I state. "So is it cool if we just study at your place?"

"My parents will be here..." he trails off, sounding embarrassed.

"I promise to be on my best behavior."

Sam laughs. "I'm not worried about you, it's my parents... they're kind of humiliating."

"Perfect, I have tons of practice in humiliating myself, I'm sure we'll get along great," I say jokingly.

Sam chuckles. "Okay, well I'll text you my address and you can come over around seven, if that works for you," he says.

"Sounds goo-" I get interrupted by a beeping noising, telling me that I have a call on the other line. I glance at my screen and see that it's Jenna. "Hey, I have another call, I'll see you tomorrow, okay?"

"Yeah, yeah," Sam says. "Bye, Brittany."

"Bye," I smile, switching calls so that I'm on the line with Jenna. "Hello?" I answer. I think that this is the most I've ever talked on the phone, especially in one night.

"Brittany?" Jenna's voice sounds weak.

I sit up, prepared for a long monologue. Actually monologue doesn't even begin to describe what Jenna does. It's more of a Jennalogue. "Hey, Jen, is everything okay?" I check, concerned.

Jenna sniffles. "I'm fine, I'm just having a girl moment," she assures me. "You don't mind, do you?"

"No, go ahead. What's wrong?"
