The Trail of Tears was a horrible event in American history. 'Indian Territory' was created in Oklahoma in the 1800s. Native Americans were forced to move there. Some went willingly. Others fought back. Soon the law that was signed into action by President Andrew Jackson was vetoed. He was forbidden from sending troops to move the Native Americans. He ignored this and sent troops anyway. Some Native Americans escaped by hiding in the Appalachian Mountains or with white neighbors that took pity on them. Thousands of Cherokees died during the death march because they weren't prepared and it was the middle of winter. This story is told from the point of view of a little Cherokee girl, Daya, from her experience of the Trail of Tears. She lived in Georgia and was forced to move to Oklahoma.
