chapter 7 - denial

AUGUSTINE POV

I sat outside in our backyard, soaking in the sun. It felt nice, but it got a little too hot. I got up to my feet and went inside the house, air conditioning blowing into my face.

It definitely felt a lot better, but it plastered my sweaty hair to my skin.

That was when I got a call. I heard a faint ringing sound and went to go grab my phone off the kitchen table. Winnie. What could be troubling him?

I answered, and before I could speak I heard stuffy sobbing.

"O-oh, are you okay?!" I asked, trying to keep myself from sounding worried. It'll only worry him more.

"Nooo .. !" Winnie sniffled. "That guy I told you about .. E-Elias .. he kissed me, Auggie! H-he thought I liked him, but I don't, I like someo--" he cut off.

Did the line cut off for a second, or did he cut his own rant off?

"Oh? Well, maybe if it'll calm you down, who do you like?"

"O-Oh, I'm .. I'm not sure about it yet. I don't know if I do. It's wrong." He sounded stuffy still, but a little better.

"How so? I won't judge you! You're my best friend." I reassured.

There was absolutely no response, besides a faint whisper. "It's a boy, Augustine. It's wrong .. so, so wrong .."

I frowned. Nothing was wrong with liking a boy. Then the thought hit me like a train. Homophobic. Oh. "Oh."

"I-I'm sorry, it's just--"

"You're .. you're fine. You're uhm .. I don't know what to say, Winnie."

"Yeah, I guess we'll change the subject. Do you still have your bear?"

"Yes. Do you have your elk?"

"Yes, Auggie."

I felt relieved. So relieved. "That's .. That's good. Uh, when does your summer break start?"

"Tomorrow!" Huh. I was supposed to start school today. Perhaps my schedule is messed up, or his is. [idk where that paragraph is specifying he starts on tuesday.]

"Oh, okay. How long?"

"10, maybe 12 weeks. But I'll spend all day with YOU!"

I flushed, deeply flattered. Why do I feel this way? I shouldn't. He's my best friend. He's homophobic. Winnie won't understand. But that boy he said he liked, he said he had Elias as a friend and a few other boys as friends ..

No, surely not me.
