Yuuhime couldn't help but think about the week before, on the cruise ship, that scandal...

'Nothing ever goes right...'

Nothing, that is, until she met Tang Xuan. She didn't know why, but his presence made everything feel ok.

That was probably a bad thing.

He would probably get hurt while with her.

Except...

'Why does he insist on sticking around?' She thought to herself. She was in her apartment, eating a bucket matcha flavored ice cream and watching her favorite mecha movie. The night was coming slowly, like it was dragging its feet. She didn't mind; she liked the sunset.

She couldn't focus on her movie. No matter how hard she tried, her mind wondered to Xuan again and again.

'What does he see in me...what do I see in him?'

She finally paused her movie and got up. Sitting here wasn't helping her, so she decided to go for a walk.

The air was cool that night; just like every other night before it.

The wind blew her black hair. It smelt like sand. She was pretty sure there was sand in the wind.

She heard a roar. Looking up, she saw giant monsters raging before her. Hopping behind a pillar, and pulled out her communicator and dialed Tang Xuan before she stopped.

Why were the miramon this close to Debia? They usually never come this close to the city, let alone the outlying desert. She watched the monsters, tearing apart whatever they saw.

Finally, she finished dialing and called him.

***

"And that's the last of them!" Tang Xuan wiped his brow and looked at Yuuhime, "I'm sure glad you called when you did, or else the miramon would of gotten to the city."

"Think nothing of it." Yuuhime replied, tucking her hands into the folds of her skirt, "I'm glad you got here in time."

"You know," Xuan stuck his pole into the sandy ground, "I like working with you. I hope we can keep working together until you're free!"

'Until I'm free...' Her eyes gleamed at the statement.

"Yeah, me too."

They heard the chip chop of helicopter blades. Yuuhime glanced into the sky and saw that it was one of the Union's, thanks to a decal on the side of it.

"It's your allies." Yuuhime said.

"Yep, better get going!" He was about to go before he stopped himself and glanced at the pale woman before him.

"Just one more thing." He held out his pinky finger. Yuuhime slightly tilted her head and looked at Xuan.

"I-it's a pinky promise!" He explained quickly, "It's like, uh, a promise that you try to keep forever, or in our case, until you're free."

"I see." Yuuhime stuck out her pinky and Xuan wrapped his around hers.

"It's a promise! Forever!" Xuan smiled, showing his white teeth.

"Yes." Yuuhime nodded.

The two stared at each other for a long time before someone from the helicopter said, "Xuan! Time to go, we have another report!"

"See you later!" Xuan waved and ran off. Yuuhime waved a little and, just maybe, cracked a little smile.

***

"THAT WAS SO CHEESY!" Xuan covered his face, which was beet red.

"You're right," Li Ling, his best friend, said with a laugh, "But she sure didn't think that when you put out your finger. You must not of been paying attention to her face."

"She must think I'm a dork!"

"Ahaha!" Li wiped a tear from his eye, "I think her face was red too, when you did the promise. She might be a dork just like you!

"Aw, don't say that about her!" Xuan lightly punched his friend on the shoulder, but Li only laughed more.

"You're so in love, man!"

"No I'm not! I'm just trying to help her."

"Suuuuuure."

"I am!" He huffed and folded his arms.

'As long as I keep my promise...Nothing else matters!' He smiled from ear to ear.

***

Yuuhime stared at her smallest finger, the one she made the promise with Xuan with. She had to wash herself after sand was blown all over her, but she couldn't help but not want to touch that particular finger.

She worried it might ruin the promise.

But that was silly, right?

She stared down at her socked feet. Maybe she should ask Xuan if it was ok to wash her finger. But she didn't need to, because washing that particular finger wouldn't ruin their promise.

Right?

She sighed and simply washed the rest of herself, leaving that hand out of it. Not washing that hand wouldn't be so bad for one night.

She sat down on her couch and turned on another mecha movie.

She usually couldn't get sleep, mainly because of her brother, Yamato, and all the "work" he had her do in the night. She hoped that nothing would come up tonight.

She rubbed her eyes.

She realized she was much less tired than normal.

That must be a good sign.
