Steve went into S.H.I.E.L.D. But I never trusted it I had many good reasons not to. Steve asked me multiple times to join but I told him no never giving him the real reason.
I had much time to myself but often found myself trying to forget my past and be normal but I knew that would never happen.
I often went to the museum, there was this whole big section devoted to Captain America, I mainly focused on the parts about Bucky. There was also quite a lot about me too.

"A symbol to the nation. A hero to the world. The story of Captain America is one of honor, bravery and sacrifice. Denied enlistment due to poor health, Steven Rogers was chosen for a program unique in the annals of American warfare. One that would transform him into the world's first Super-Soldier." The narrator spoke as I walked through.

"In this rare footage, everyone's favourite war hero, Captain America...

"Battle tested, Captain America and his Howling Commandos quickly earned their stripes." Another narrator said as I looked upon eight mannikins dressed in the exact clothes we wore as behind them were giant images of all eight of us. Captain was in the front, too his left was Bucky and too his right was me. "Their mission: taking down HYDRA, the Nazi rogue science division."

I walked over to one panel, most people just walked past it going to the more interesting stuff about Steve but I stood staring at it.

"Best friends since childhood, Bucky Barnes,
(Y/n) (Y/l/n) and Steve Rogers were inseparable on both schoolyard and battlefield. Two year's before the war (Y/n) and Barnes were married. Barnes is the only Howling Commando to give his life in service of his country." The narrator said, I look at the picture of my Husband.

"You should be proud of yourself, Peggy." Steve told the old lady at lay in a bed. Steve was able to find out that she was still alive and after a bit of looking we were able to find her. I stood behind the chair Steve sat in.

"I have lived a life. My only regret is that you didn't get to live yours." Her weak but warm voice said.

"I'll give you two a moment." I say heading towards the door.

"No stay." I heard Peggy say so I stopped as she looked back at Steve. "What is it?"

"For as long as I can remember, I just wanted to do what was right. I guess I'm not quite sure what that is anymore." I listen to Steve. "And I thought I could throw myself back in and follow orders. Serve. It's just not the same."

"You're always so dramatic." Peggy laughed, "Look, you saved the world. We rather mucked it up."

"You didn't. Knowing that you helped found S.H.I.E.L.D. is half the reason I stay." Steve said.

"So did (Y/n)." Peggy told him. "Hey. The world has changed, and none of us can go back. All we can do is our best. And sometimes the best that we can do is to start over." Peggy started coughing.

"Peggy." Steve said as he got up and handed her a glass of water.

    "Steve." She gasped.

    "Yeah?" Steve said.

"You're alive. You both are. You came back." She cried.

    "Yeah, Peggy." Steve smiled.

"It's been so long. So long." She cried.

"Well, I couldn't leave my best girl. Not when she still owes me a dance." Steve said as she quieted down.

———

"I think it's getting worse. A cop pulled me over last week. He thought I was drunk. I swerved to miss a plastic bag. I thought it was an IED." A lady confessed as Steve and I listened from the side.

"Some stuff you leave there. Other stuff you bring back. It's our job to figure out how to carry it. Is it gonna be in a big suitcase, or in a little man-purse? It's up to you." A man named Sam spoke to a group of people who sat in front of him, Sam worked at S.H.I.E.L.D. with Steve.

Steve waited until everyone was gone before he walked over to Sam.

"Look who it is, the running man." Sam said.

"Caught the last few minutes. It's pretty intense." Steve told him.

"Yeah, Brother, we all got the same problems. Gilt, regret." Sam explained as I walked over.

     "You lose someone?" Steve asked.

"My wingman, Riley. Flying a night mission. Standard PJ rescue op. Nothing we hadn't done 1,000 times before. Until an RPG knocked Riley's dump ass out of the sky. Nothing I could do. It's like I was up there just to watch." Sam confessed.

    "I'm sorry." Steve said.

"After that. I had a really hard time finding a reason for being over there, you know?" Sam said.

"But you're happy now, back in the world?" I say.

"The number of people giving me orders is down to about zero. So, hell yeah." Sam smiled and stuck out his hand, "I'm Sam Wilson."

"(Y/n) Barnes." I smile shaking his hand.

"Are you thinking about getting out?" Sam asked Steve.

"No." Steve answered. "I don't know. To be honest, I don't know what I would do with myself if I did."

"Ultimate fighting? Just a great idea off the top of my head." Sam laughed. "Seriously, you could do whatever you want to do. What makes you happy?"

"I don't know." Steve smiled.

We got home at Steve's place late at night.

"So sweet. That is so nice." I blonde haired girl, Steve's neighbour, Kate said as she talked to someone on her phone. "Hi, I got to go, though. Okay bye. My aunt, she's kind of an insomniac." Sharon said to us placing her phone in the laundry basket she held. "Yeah."

"Hey, if you want... If you want, you're welcome to use my machine. Might be cheaper than the one in the basement." Steve offered.

"Oh, yeah? What's it cost?" Kate asked.

"A cup of coffee?" Steve tried.

"Thank you, but I already have a load in downstairs, and you really don't want my scrubs in your machine. I just finished a rotation in the infectious disease ward, so..." Kate explained.

"Well, I'll keep my distance." Steve said.

"Hopefully, not too far." Kate smiled. "Oh, and I think you left your stereo on."

"Oh. Right. Thank you." Steve said as she walked away.
