happy new year

drops of champagne left in the bottle,

as people cheer and laugh in their joyous bubble.

fireworks of countless colors take to the skies,

as they enthusiastically tell each other hopeful lies.

looking into the raucous crowd,

i don't understand why we declare things out loud,

when we clearly know deep down,

that we'd never ever get to wear the crown.

to another year of daydreaming a life, void of struggle or any sign of strife.

to another year of being let down by the truth, as we slowly waste away our youth.

to another year of unfulfilled dreams, backlogged hopes bursting at the seams.

to everyone, i say happy new year,

voice breaking and eyes filled with tears.
