                         TWILIGHT

I walk through the woods at twilight.
					       A veery calls.
The sun, too, spirals down.
				  The air cools.
The wind is dying that all day
				    swayed the leaves
Of the ash and maple
			  like a vast umbrella
and shook the quivering aspen.
					So many days
To pass through;
		       so many lost.
				       Set like a stele
on the next rise,
		      a gnarled gray birch
					      lauds the old ways.
I think instead how it grew
				from so many small lives.
