The first volume is about the second child, Fiona, who lives a tormented relectionship with Nathan Abbott, a family friend: he go injured during the Independence War and he has lost partially the eyesight and now is facing post-traumatic stress.

As antagonistic forces loom in the distance, and Catherine's protest gets closer and closer to becoming an event, Catherine has to confront everything that she's come to know and believe so far. She has to confront both the past actions and past emotions that she's been putting off dealing with for the past few months. She has to figure out a way to work with the Prince, who she'd rather not see ever again, and deal with the revelations regarding him. But most of all, Catherine has to decide if she wants to continue on her current life path, or make a decision that will change the trajectory of her life forever.
