This is the story of three women, who find themselves sharing each others lives, homes and family. Phyllis, an Anglo-Indian memsahib, has married a British soldier whose mother and sister find it hard to tolerate a high-spirited, solar topee wearing ‘foreigner’, joining their traditional family in England. She has sacrificed her life of privilege in India, to live in England with her new husband’s family, but soon his regiment is posted overseas. As he heads East, Phyllis is left to defend herself from her in-law’s cold and increasingly brutal attitude. She struggles to rescue her baby from being snatched away by her childless sister-in-law, who wants her as her own. Dance with Fireflies is based on a true story. Thoughtfully written, it explores the prejudice facing an Anglo-Indian woman arriving in England from the decaying Raj in the 1940’s. It reveals differences that neither side knew existed.
