The biggest night in Hollywood is just weeks away. On Sunday, April 25 - early morning of Monday, April 26 for Indian viewers - the annual Academy Awards ceremony will be held to commemorate the best of cinema of 2020. Delayed by over two months due to the Covid-19 pandemic, this 93rd edition is being organised at two locations in Los Angeles - the usual venue of Dolby Theatre and at Union Station, the latter being LA's main railway station and thus a spacious outdoor venue, so as to maintain safety protocols. In March, organisers added London and Paris as additional venues to avoid nominees travelling. Most award ceremonies, including the Golden Globes and Screen Actors Guild (SAG) Awards, were held virtually this year. But the grand old Oscars is hoping to navigate through the vagaries of the event.
There are other peculiarities this year. Theatres were closed for the most part of 2020. So, most films premiered either directly on OTT (over-the-top) platforms, or shortly after their theatrical debut. Of the eight films nominated this year in the Best Picture category - itself a departure from the usual 10 - only five were released theatrically for a short time. For the first time in Oscars history, two women - Chloe Zhao for Nomadland, and Emerald Fennell for Promising Young Woman - have been nominated for Best Director.
For the first time in the 93 years that the Oscars has been running, two women, Chloé Zhao and Emerald Fennell, have been nominated for Best Director in one year. They are the sixth and seventh women to ever appear in this category. Zhao is also the first woman of colour to be nominated in this category.Все права защищены
