Hallie Haverty is what you would think a very ordinary sixteen year old girl. She would be, in face, if not for her mother. Or rather, for what her mother did to their lives, since Hallie was born.
Something bad happened to her mother, and now she is convinced that the world is evil. So she chose to protect herself and most importantly, Hallie from it.
Hallie has never left her home, which is a house set deep in the country in England. She is home-schooled by her mother who is from Ireland originally.
For sixteen years she has obeyed the one most important rule in her house: Never go outside the property. She has tried to understand her mothers rantings about the cruel world, and being an empathic girl, she has never wanted to hurt her by making her mother worry for her if she broke The Rule.
Only, a deepening curiosity develops over time as she watches the world outside. She loves to draw and paint and she gorges herself in as many books as she can find, feeding her knowledge about a world she does not know, about a world painted quite differently than what her mother tells her what it is like.
For a girl so cut off from the world, she should really know next to nothing, but she fills her head with stories of joy and love and happy-ever-afters. This is the world she expects, it must be, but how can it be when her mother describes it so differently?
In a quest to find out the truth, Hallie tries desperately to see the world. She must only see it for a minute, only a little of it, and she shall be satisfied, but will it be enough, or will she follow her temptations and delve into the deep?
She doesn't mean to do much harm, but will she go too far? Will it be too late to turn back? Even if it isn't, how can she, once she knows the world?
One thing is for sure. Hallie's curiosity leads her into unsuspecting places and situations. It can lead her too far. It will change her life forever. All Rights Reserved
