Light Yagami sat at his regular old swivel chair, at his regular old desk watching the regular old news and writing in an irregular notebook. On the floor next to the chair, was his irregular girlfriend, Misa Amane, sitting on her legs and humming a tune and basking in the company of her one and only love. Her pale, slender hand reached up as it usually did, signalling to the auburn haired teenager her wish to entwine her fingers around his. He complied without removing his eyes from the television screen and moved his non-dominant hand down to meet her. She attempted to slip her fingers through his when she felt a cool band of metal encircling one of her boyfriend's fingers. She jolted back in response, shock and anger coursing through her like an electric current. "Light... What is that?" Her voice was sickly sweet, dripping with ill-disguised poison. He hummed absentmindedly in response, like he usually did when Misa attempted to bother him with frivolous conversation. "The ring, Light. Who the hell gave you a ring?" Misa's irregular language startled Light enough to get him to cease writing with his mechanical pencil. He looked down at his hand before nodding in recognition. "A friend. It's a promise ring." "Oh really? Why are you wearing it?" Her voice had lost some of it's edge, but she couldn't quite let it go completely. "I broke the promise."
