Trigger Warning: Deaths, Mentions of death (including family death), grief, emotional distress, and end-of-world themes.
Hi, I'm Eli, and this is my entry for the WITW contest. The prompt I picked was a writer ending up in their own story. At first, I thought, cool - just 2000 words. But once I started, I realized how brutal that limit can be. Every sentence I wanted to add meant sacrificing another, and it hurt to cut scenes I loved.
But in the process, I learned something important, sometimes restraint makes a story hit harder(not in my case cause my original was perfect😝)
This piece became more than just a challenge as it forced me to sit with my characters, face the weight of what I'd written for them, and decide what truly mattered.
I hope you feel that too when you read it.
