April

I walked out of the office and towards the elevator Mr. Martínez following right behind me.
I pressed the button and waited for the door to open. As the door opened I walked inside.
Mr. Martínez put his phone in his trouser pocket and walked in.
His back facing me as he pressed the button.

Though I have been in an elevator with him alone numerous times before but for some reason I couldn’t help but feel nervous today.
Mr. Martínez turned around and took his left hand out of his trouser pocket.

The elevator started going down with a slight shake.

Mr. Martínez slowly took a step towards me and I took a step back pressing myself to the wall as much as I can.

I couldn’t help but feel an adrenaline rush as he slowly placed both of his hands on the handrails caging me.

I stood there frozen keeping my gaze low.
He bends his head low to come to my height.
I could feel his strong gaze on me and his oh-so-familiar perfume slowly started to fill up my nostril.

It felt like an eternity as we stood there but he finally broke the silence.

“Sorry I was a little busy about the meeting today.”

I didn’t reply but looked up to the sparkling silver chain dangling in his neck.

He waited for a minute and carefully tucked my lock behind my ear not wanting to startle me.

“I promise I’ll make it up to you.” his dimples immediately popped up.
He stood back and stand next to me.

As the door opened Mr. Martínez walked out and extended his hand for me to hold.

I stood there hesitating, should I?

His assuring smile gave me enough courage to hold his hand, and as soon as I did his large hand engulfed mine.

We reached his car and took off.

The car took unknown roads and turns.

I cuddled up in my seat relaxing, letting the breeze play with my hair.

I sat up straight as soon as I heard the familiar soothing sound of the sea.

Though the darkness engulfed the sea the faint sound was still audible.

Mr. Martínez parked the car on the beach.
I walked out of the car to embrace the familiar smell.
I often come here to spend some alone time but since I got this job I couldn’t come here that often.
This side of the beach was much emptier.
Some shops were open on the other side. Some shop lights could be seen and light chatter could be heard in distance.

“Come on get up on the hood.”

“Huh?”

“I -I am fine I can stand here no…..”

Mr. Martínez not letting me finish off my sentence as always held my hip with his strong grip and set me up on the hood.

I immediately gripped his shoulder tightly for support.

“Don’t worry I got you.”

I let go of him.
He walked towards the back door and came back with two wraps in his hand.

“Dinner.”

He got up and sat next to me.

We ate our dinner in silence enjoying the moonlight reflecting on the waves.

“April there’s something I need to talk to you about.”

I stopped eating and turned to look at him.

“Do you remember the first time we met? An unusual way to meet.”

“To be honest you caught my attention that day. I don’t know how to describe that feeling but there was something, and I know now what that feeling was.”

I thought of his words while finishing the left off.

“B-but you hated me.”

I could still remember his harsh words, and the way he treated me back then, how miserable I felt, night after night I spent criticizing and looking down on myself.

He took a deep breath and turned to face me.

“I have never hated you April, not even for a minute.”

“I know I have misbehaved with you, treated you unfairly and you have every reason to know why I did what I did.”

He took another deep breath.

“ Back when I was in high school there was this girl that I liked. We were inseparable and madly in love. We went to college together, we planned our future together. Everything was going perfectly or that’s what I thought.

It was on our graduation day I planned to propose to her. I bought a gorgeous dress for her and a diamond ring. I was dying out of excitement. I went to look for her after the program on our favorite spot knowing she will be waiting for me like she always did.”

He took a long pause and stared at the sea.

“Then wh-what happened?”

“When I found her she was kissing my best friend.”

I stared at the crashing white waves not knowing what to say or how I fit into all of this.

“Her name was April.”

“I am telling you all this because I know what I did was wrong, I had no right to hurt you the way I did."

"When I saw your name on the day of your interview all the anger, frustration hurt came back to me like sharp knives cutting through my skin, and before I knew I was taking my revenge of her on you.”

He slowly took my hands in his.

“I am sorry April for everything, I understand and respect your decision if you choose not to forgive me, you have every right to do that.”

I didn’t realize when the stream of tears started to flow down.

I wiped my cheeks.

“I-it’s n-not your fault Mr. Martínez. I have been a disappointment my whole life, to everyone.
I- am sorry for making you g-go through all of this.”

“Are you kidding me? I am the one who should say sorry to you. And you are not a disappointment, never say that ever again.”

He cupped my tear tainted face and wiped my tears.

“You are the most beautiful thing that has happened to me in April. You made me feel what being in love feels like, you made me give myself another chance, you made me believe that love and kindness still exist, you have healed me April.”

He caressed my cheek and planted a soft kiss on my forehead.

“You have given me more than I can ask for and it’s time I do the same for you. "

"Let me be with you April, don’t think of yourself alone, you have me and you will have me forever.”

“Will - you let me be with you April?”

I stared down, my heart started to beat faster.

He patiently waited for my reply.

After a long pause, a looked up to him in the eye for the first time.

His beautiful hazel eyes shining in the moonlight.

I smiled at him nodding yes.

His dimples popped out immediately as his smile brightens.

He excitedly hugged me which resulted in me lying flat on my back losing my balance and him lying on top of me.

We stared at each other listening to the tune of each other's heartbeat.

He slowly lessens the distance between us and pressed his lips on mine.

The kiss seemed to last for an eternity.

He finally let go of leaving a soft peck.

“I am not sure how long I can restrain myself from tasting that strawberry again.” he chuckled.
