Chapter 25: Your Love Never Fails
HEART check!
Ngayong araw ay magha-heart check ulit sina Terrence at Eunice. Not as a couple, but as a family. Kasama na nila si Cyla, habang ang six-month old na si baby David ay natutulog ng mahimbing sa mga braso ni Eunice.
Every month ay nagha-"heart check" silang mag-asawa para ma-discuss ng malaya ang mga misunderstandings at maging open sila sa mga suggestion for improvement sa pagsasama nila.
"Okay, sweetie, the rules are very simple," malumanay na paliwanag ni Eunice kay Cyla. "While someone is talking, we listen only. When it's your turn to talk, you can say anything that you have inside your heart. Lastly, just be honest. No need to lie to us. Don't be afraid that you might hurt Papa or me. We do this, so we'll know how to better love each other as a whole family."
Tumango si Cyla. "Okie dokie, Mommy!"
Si Terrence ang nakaisip na isali nila ang panganay na anak para maaga nitong matutunan ang pagiging open sa loob ng pamilya. This way, Cyla can feel that they listen to her, they appreciate her opinions, and her feelings matter to them. Hindi na nito kailangang hanapin ang self-worth sa labas ng bahay kung sa loob pa lang ng pamilya ay naibibigay na nila iyon dito.
Eunice thought it was a great idea. Cyla is growing up fast. They should be intentional in instilling Christian values and introducing Jesus to her. Cyla attends a Sunday school, of course. Pero iba pa rin kung mismong magulang ang nagtuturo dito. At hindi lang basta turo, pero m-ino-model dapat dito.
Kinakausap din nina Terrence at Eunice sina Matthew at Frances para masiguro na kahit magkaiba ng environment, hindi malilito si Cyla sa identity nito bilang tunay na anak ng Diyos.
Eunice prayed a short opening prayer.
"I'll go first, alright?" sabi ni Terrence sa anak pagkatapos nilang magdasal. "Para may ideas ka kung anong mga puwedeng sabihin."
Tumango si Cyla at ngumiti. "Papa, when I'm honest, you won't get hurt?
Umiling si Terrence. "Don't be afraid to say anything. Mas gusto kong honest ka sa'kin. This way, I know where to improve as your Papa."
"Okie dokie! Let's start!"
Kahit inaantok si Eunice ay pinilit niyang idilat ang mga mata. Pinigilan niya ring mapahikab. Sa totoo lang, mula nang ipanganak si David ay wala na siyang kumpleto at maayos na tulog. She can only nap when the baby's taking a nap, too. She can only sleep when Terrence gets home from work and takes over the baby care.
But David is kind of greedy for breastmilk. Kahit nandyan si Terrence, at nakapag-pump naman siya ng breastmilk, mas gusto pa ring sumama sa kanya ni David kapag nagugutom ito. Kaya hindi pa din siya tunay na nakakapagpahinga kahit nandyan si Terrence.
Their baby won't drink on a bottle, kahit gatas din naman ni Eunice ang nandoon. But according to her sister-in-law, Tanya, ganoon daw talaga. Most babies want to have milk with the warmth of their mothers' bosom. Nararamdaman daw iyon ng mga ito.
Anyway, Terrence started talking. Nangangalay na rin si Eunice sa pagkarga ng natutulog na anak, but she does not want to stop holding him. Parang sa kanya din nagmana ng pagka-"clingy" si baby David.
"I like how eager you are to learn, Cyla," sabi ni Terrence. "I like how you do your home works as soon as you get home from school. And your independent already at your age. Papa is very proud of you. Although, lately..."
Nagkatinginan silang mag-asawa. Tumango si Eunice. She's urging Terrence to open up to his daughter. Nitong mga nakaraang araw kasi ay bothered si Terrence. Una nito iyong in-open up sa kanya at lagi na nilang ipinagdadasal.
Tumikhim ito at bumaling ulit sa anak. "Lately, napansin ko na lagi mong gusto sa bahay ng Mama mo. I have no problem if you like to spend more time with your Mama, Daddy Matt, and the triplets. But also, Papa felt kind of jealous..."
Napangiti si Eunice sa pag-amin ng asawa sa anak.
Nakatitig lang si Cyla kay Terrence. Alam mong nakikinig ito ng mataman at hinihintay ang sasabihin ng Papa nito.
"I'm kind of jealous. I just feel like, you don't want to spend more time with me. Naisip ko, may ayaw ka ba kay Papa? Mas gusto mo ba si Daddy Matt mo kaysa sa'kin?" mahinahong sabi ni Terrence.
No'ng unang beses nito 'yong sinabi sa kanya, umuusok ang tainga nito. Selos na selos ang daddy brown eyes! Pinigilan niyang matawa sa alaala. Ngayon, mahinahon na ito. Dahil naitaas na nila sa Diyos. Gusto na lang nitong malaman ang rason.
"I know you're only nine, anak. But I also know that you're not just a regular child. I can feel inside my heart..." Terrence touched his left chest. "That you might be hiding something from Papa."
Napakurap si Cyla. Tumango-tango. She's really mature for her age. Noon pa lang napansin na nila iyon.
"Every Sunday, you always choose to go home to your Mama's house. Actually, Papa is okay with that, anak. But later, napansin ko, palagi mo nang pinipili doon..."
Ang schedule ng set-up nina Frances at Terrence para kay Cyla ay every other week, Monday to Wednesday—kay Terrence; Thursday to Saturday—kay Frances. Nagbabago lang iyon base sa mapag-uusapan tuwing summer vacations at holiday vacations.
For Sunday, Cyla is free to choose where to stay. At matalino ang bata. Dahil alternate din ang pagpili nito. Kung ngayong Sunday kay Terrence ito sasama, sa susunod na Sunday ay sa Mama naman nito.
But for three straight months now—that's twelve Sundays, laging pinipili ni Cyla na sumama kay Frances at Matthew.
Napansin din 'yon ni Eunice kaya napatanong siya kay Frances kung may sinasabi ba dito si Cyla na tampo sa kanila o ano. Wala naman daw.
"Do you find it more comfortable there?" ani Terrence. Yumuko para diretso ang pagtingin sa mata ng anak. "Or do we make you uncomfortable here? If so, you can tell us, so Mommy Eunice and I can change and improve.
"I'm not sad anymore that you always choose to be with your Mama.
It's okay and the Lord told me that this is not a competition. I'm sorry if I felt that way, anak. I understand now that you're still young and you're closer to your Mama. Kayo ang mas matagal na magkasama sa Australia noon, eh. So, it's normal that you always want to be with her.
"Jesus already told me, also, that as your father here on earth, my love for you and your love for me is only between us, anak. Walang comparison sa kung gaano mo ka-love ang Mama mo, si Daddy Matt, or kahit si Mommy Eunice. Ang dapat ko lang isipin, mag-grow to be a better father to you—the one that will lead you closer to God.
"Ngayon, gusto ko lang malaman galing mismo sa'yo, anak... Anong nakita mo sa'kin—sa words or actions ko, na sa tingin mo hindi naman ganoon si Jesus? How can I improve as your Papa?"
Tumango-tango si Cyla.
"Sweetie, you can talk now," sabi ni Eunice. "Kapag may hindi ka maintindihan, you can ask, okay?"
"I understand po," anito at saka ngumiti. Bumalik ang pansin nito kay Terrence. "I love you, Papa."
Nakita niya ang paggalaw ng adam's apple ni Terrence. His brown eyes softened even more.
"I'm sorry, Papa, I made you sad," dagdag pa ni Cyla. "Maybe, I was jealous, too... I don't know, Papa. When I'm here, you don't play and talk to me longer. Laging short lang. You need to play with baby David first because Mommy Eunice needs to sleep..." Napayuko si Cyla at suminghot. "Kapag time na to play with me, you're already tired, Papa..."
Nagkatinginan silang mag-asawa. Cyla's opening up!
"I'm a little bit sad. So, I just go to Mama's house, because we take care both of the triplets. I think Mama needs me more than here. But when I'm in Mama's house, I also miss you, Papa, and Mommy Eunice, and baby David. But I know you don't have longer time for me, Papa, because baby David is just small pa..." Cyla started crying. "I love baby David but he takes more of your time, Papa. I think you love him more than me, Papa.
"Is that being jealous? That's bad, di 'ba? I don't want to be jealous, Papa. I want to be always happy, but I'm sad..."
Hanggang sa humagulgol na ito.
Natulala si Eunice, habang si Terrence ay mabilis na niyakap ang anak. Binuhat nito si Cyla at tumayo. Hinagod-hagod nito ang likod ng bata.
"I'm sorry, anak. I-I'm s-sorry," gumaragal ang boses ni Terrence. "Papa didn't notice. I-I'm sorry... I love you. Wala akong mas mahal. Pantay kayo ni baby David. I'm sorry you felt that way. I'm sorry..."
Yumakap si Cyla sa leeg ni Terrence at nagpatuloy sa pag-iyak.
Nangingilid na rin ang luha sa mga mata ni Eunice. Cyla's a sweet and honest girl. Noon pa man, nararamdaman niya na ang pagka-ginto ng puso nito. Anak na anak ito ni Terrence.
She's playful like ordinary little girls, but she's already responsible. Kaso nga habang lumalaki, natututo maglihim ang bata. Secrets are okay. But if it's a kept negative feeling that needs to be settled inside the family, as much as possible, Terrence and Eunice wanted to train Cyla to be comfortable in voicing out her heart. Dahil ayaw nilang dalhin nito iyon sa paglaki.
After a while, Cyla was able to calm down. Kumuha si Terrence ng tubig at pinainom sa anak.
"I will balance my time between you and baby David, okay?" Terrence said. Buhat pa rin nito ang anak. "We will play three altogether when Mommy Eunice needs to take a rest. Thank you for being honest, anak. Papa appreciates you so much. I love you... You're still my very first baby, Cyla Therese. I love you so much."
"I'm n-not a b-bad girl, Papa? B-Because I want more t-time with y-you?" Hindi na umiiyak si Cyla, sumisinok-sinok na lang.
Umiling si Terrence. "You just want a fair share of time between you and baby David, right?"
"Yes."
"You don't like that I spend more time with you rather than baby David, too, right?"
Umiling ito. "Baby David needs you, too, Papa."
"You're not a bad girl. You're feeling is valid. You just know you need me, too, because I am your Papa. I will improve on balancing my time. I will work hard on that.
"Unang beses namin magkaroon ng baby ni Mommy Eunice mo. Hindi ko napansin na hindi na pala tayo masyadong nagba-bonding. Because you're honest with me, I know my mistakes already. Next time, I know what's the right thing to do."
Ngumiti na si Cyla. "I thought you're going to be mad at me, Papa, if I told you this. Mama said I should not compete with babies. Because I am their 'ate'!"
"That's also true, darling. Your Mama Frances is right." Kumuha ng tissue si Terrence at pinunasan ang mga pisngi ni Cyla. "But you can tell us straight, if you feel neglected already. If it's true, we'll change our ways so you don't have to experience it. If it's not, we'll explain to you and pray together, so we can help you overcome that feeling."
Tumango-tango si Cyla. "I love you, Papa!" Yumakap ulit ito kay Terrence. "I love you so much. You're my only Papa! I just want to love you forever."
Napangiti na si Terrence. "I love you, too. Hindi ako magsasawang sabihin sa'yo, anak, kahit mag-dalaga ka na o mag-asawa ka na. I will always love you, okay?"
"Okie dokie!" hagikgik ni Cyla at humalik ito sa pisngi ni Terrence.
Nag-thumbs up siya nang bumaling sa kanya si Terrence. His brown eyes were sparkling with love and glee.
Bumalik na ulit sa upuan ang mag-ama. Bumaling sa kanya si Cyla.
"I love you, Mommy Eunice. I'm sorry if I made you sad, too, because I always go to Mama."
"I understand, sweetie." Alam naman ni Eunice ang stand niya sa buhay ng bata. Wala pa ding makakatalo kay Frances bilang totoong ina nito.
Pero katulad nga ng sabi ng Diyos kay Terrence, hindi kompetisyon ang mayroon sa kanilang mga magulang. Eunice is contented and thankful that Cyla loves her, too, as her stepmother.
"You don't have to worry about me, Ate Cyla," lambing niya pa. Inilipat niya sa kabilang balikat ang ulo ni baby David dahil nangalay na ang isa. "Because of you, I understand more how to love greatly."
Kahit hindi mo totoong anak, kahit hindi mo totoong kadugo--walang makakapagbigay ng limitasyon sa pag-ibig na dalisay.
Walang limitasyon ang kalayaang umibig. Basta't na-a-ayon palagi sa salita ng Panginoon—dahil Ito ang lumikha ng pag-ibig.
"I'm sorry, too, Cyla, if you feel like I've been neglecting you," sabi pa ni Eunice. "Nag-a-adjust pa kasi si Mommy kay baby David."
"I don't feel neglected by you, Mommy," ani Cyla.
"Really?"
Tumango ito. "I want to help you, also, Mommy Eunice. I thought if I'm not around the house, you have more time to sleep. Because every time I come home from school, even though you're sleepy, you still make me some snacks." Lumabi ito. "I don't want you to be too tired because of me, Mommy. Baby David needs you more than me."
Parang natunaw ang puso ni Eunice. Oh, this sweet, smart, and very considerate girl...
Napangiti siya at napahigpit ang pagyakap kay David. Look at your Ate Cyla, anak. She loves us very much.
"Pa-kiss nga!" aya niya dito. She extended her free hand and reached Cyla. Lumapit sa kanya ito at hinalikan siya sa pisngi. Pati si baby David.
"I love you, Ate Cyla," lambing niya dito. "I'm so proud you're growing beautiful inside and out! Honest at sincere ka kay Papa mo. Tapos you're taking care of me and baby David. God is raising you well!"
Humagikgik ito. "I love you, Mommy Eunice! It's okay if you don't have to make my snacks after school. You just take a nap and I will also look after baby David for you until Papa comes home."
Nakangiti na rin si Terrence habang pinapanood sila. At least, panatag na ito. Alam na nito kung saan mag-i-improve bilang ama.
Doon naman mas hanga si Eunice sa asawa. Mukha na itong perfect sa totoo lang.
Pero siguro, ang nagpapaka-"perfect" dito ay 'yong alam nitong madami pa itong kailangang matutunan, kailangang itamang mga pagkakamali, at handa itong magbago. Hindi takot sa correction. Tumatanggap ng suggestions. Hindi lang ito sa spiritual growth nag-i-invest. Pero pati sa personal at relational aspect ng pagkatao nito.
Iba talaga kapag ang nasa gitna ng puso ng lalaki ay ang Panginoong Diyos. Isa lang ang laging sinusunod na standard nito: to be Christ-like and to love like God.
Nakaramdam ng kilig sa puso si Eunice.
Pero napahikab na siya—tinatalo ng antok ang kilig. Four hours lang ang tulog niya kagabi, putol putol pa.
Hindi naman siya umaangal. She just prays that the Lord would continue to provide her strength to nurse David well. Nasa adjustment period pa silang lahat.
"Do you want to say more, sweetie?" tanong niya kay Cyla.
"No more, Mommy. It's your turn to speak."
"Oh, I have no tampo naman with you. You're not makulit din. And you've been very helpful to me."
Wala din naman kay Terrence. Nase-settle naman nila ng asawa ang issues sa couple's "heart-check" nila.
"Ano, kay baby David lang siguro ako may complaint. Mabigat na siya. Tapos laging gusto ng milk. Tapos laging umiiyak..." angal niya kunwari. "I just want to sleep. Ten hours straight!"
Terrence and Cyla both chuckled. Tumawa din siya at kinintilan ng halik ang bumbunan ng anak. Inilapat niya na ang ulo nito sa dibdib niya. Her shoulders were relaxed a bit.
"But baby David needs a lot of time and attention now. I want to enjoy this season. He'll grow in God's time."
Cyla giggled. "Baby David's guwapo naman, Mommy. Just like Papa."
"Amen," sambit ni Terrence.
Nagtawanan silang tatlo.
Maybe the baby can feel he's being talked about. Bigla itong nagising pero hindi naman umiyak. Baby David slowly opened his eyes.
"Hello, baby brown eyes..." Eunice whispered. "Are you awake na, hmm? Did you have a good sleep? Sana si Mommy din." Hinalik-halikan niya ang mga pisngi nito.
Ipinasa niya kay Terrence ang anak pagkatapos. Eunice stood up and stretched her arms and legs. "Let's close our heart check in prayer. Next month, gagawin natin ulit 'to. Is it good with you, Ate Cyla?"
"Opo! I like this, Mommy. I feel lighter and happier."
"Praise Jesus!"
"Praise Jesus!" sabay taas nito ng dalawang kamay.
"Alright, let's all pray together."
Hinawakan ni Cyla ang kamay niya at kamay ni Terrence. Eunice extended her other free hand to touch baby David.
Terrence lead the prayer. After that, they took a photo to be a little remembrance of their first ever family "heart check". They want to make this a family tradition. At kapag malaki na si David, makakasali na din ito!
Bumabagsak na ang mga mata ni Eunice habang nagha-hapunan sila.
"Take a sleep. Ako nang bahala kay Cyla at David," ani Terrence sabay haplos sa buhok niya. "I know what to do in case David gets hungry."
"Ayaw niyang uminom sa baby bottle..." Napahikab siya.
Kumindat ito. "I got this, baby. Sige na, matulog ka na. It's also your birthday tomorrow. At least you can have a good sleep tonight, right?"
Tumango siya. Kahit tatlo o apat na oras na tulog lang... Basta't tuloy-tuloy ay ayos na!
Ilang beses na siyang na-tempt na kumuha ng nanny para sa anak. Pero wala naman siyang ibang pinagkakaabalahan at ayaw niyang may ma-miss na moments kasama si David. So, she devoted herself on being a full-time and hands-on mother.
This is just a phase, after all. God is sustaining her!
Pagka-akyat niya sa kuwarto ay naghilamos at sepilyo siya. Pagkatapos ay humiga na siya ng kama. Nagdasal ng taimtim.
Nakatulog agad siya pagkabigkas pa lang ng, "In Jesus' name, Amen."
Naging payapa ang tulog ni Eunice. Payapa din ang paligid. Pati ang panaginip niya ay maganda din. She dreamt of Addie and Soleil. Parang memory noong magkakasama sila sa fashion school. They would eat together during breaks, shop together for materials, had an overnight in the apartment to finish a project...
Wala na siyang balita kay Soleil. Ayon kay Madame Lilou noon, inamin ni Soleil na ito ang nasa likod ng emails na kumalat. Umamin daw ito pagkabalik niya ng Pilipinas. Then, she resigned from work. Umuwi daw ito sa pamilya sa probinsiya para doon na makapanganak.
Si Addie, nakakausap niya minsan. Nakakapag-video call sila kapag may pagkakataon. Kinukuwentuhan din siya ni Tita Gena sa pagiging seryoso ng kaibigan niya sa relasyon nito sa Panginoon. Addie even volunteered in the church. Ngayon, ito na ang Sunday school teacher ng mga dati niyang estudyante.
Eunice is at peace. Mahigit isang taon na nang umalis siya sa Paris. Wala na ding kirot sa puso niya sa ginawa ni Soleil. Kung magiging magkaibigan ulit silang tatlo, magiging masaya si Eunice. Kung hindi na talaga, ayos lang din naman. Masaya pa rin siya.
Kahit anong loloobin ng Diyos sa buhay nila, magpupuri at magiging masaya siya. Dahil alam niyang para sa ikabubuti nilang lahat iyon.
Napakagaan ng pakiramdam ni Eunice... Hanggang sa naalimpungatan siya sa kung anong tunog. Dumilat siya at natanaw na maliwanag na sa labas!
Napabangon siya at napasulyap sa orasang nakasabit sa dingding. Nanlaki ang mga mata niya. Sampung oras siyang nakatulog! Tuloy-tuloy!
It's her complete sleep for the first time after giving birth! Pinagsalikop niya ang mga kamay at napadasall. Nagpasalamat siya sa Diyos sa masarap na tulog at bagong umaga.
After the prayer, she roamed her eyes around the room. Nasaan si Terrence?
Pagtingin niya sa crib. Wala din ang anak nila.
She heard again the sound that woke her up.
"Terrence? Terrence?" tawag niya sa asawa. Akmang aalis na siya sa kama ng bumukas ang pinto.
"Good morning, Mommy Eunice! Happy birthday!" maligayang bati ni Cyla. Buhat pa nito si baby David na gising na gising. Pero hindi naman umiiyak.
Lumapit sa kanya ito at humalik sa pisngi niya.
"Thank you, Ate Cyla." Ipinasa nito sa kanya si David. "Did you take care of your baby brother? Where's your Papa?"
"Let's go, Mommy!" Hinila nito ang kamay niya. "Papa's waiting outside the garden!"
Napakurap-kurap siya. Sandali, wala pa siyang suklay, hilamos at toothbrush! But Cyla kept on pulling her hand.
Nagpahila na lang siya dito habang buhat niya sa isang braso ang anak.
Paglabas nila sa garden ay napasinghap si Eunice. Napakurap-kurap siya kasabay nang pagbilis ng tibok ng puso.
The garden's set up reminded her of that time... May picnic blanket at mga pagkain...
Before, when Eunice asked Terrence for a pretend love for a month (dahil akala niya ay may annulment sila), Terrence prepared the exact same set-up for their "date". Ang pinagkaiba lang ngayon ay umaga...
But Terrence's fresh look, his sparkling brown eyes, and his smiles were all the same... just like before.
"Terrence..."
Inangat nito ang gitara at sinimulang patugtugi. Iyon ang naririnig niya kanina!
"You're my peace of mind in this crazy world..." pagkanta nito habang nakangiti. "You're everything I've tried to find... your love is a pearl..."
Napasinghap siya at napahawak sa labi That's the very same song he sang before, too!
Sinalubong ng mga mata nito ang kanya. Dumiretso sa puso niya ang pagmamahal doon...
"You're my Mona Lisa, you're my rainbow skies... And my only prayer is that you realize..." Naging mas emosyonal ang mga mata nito.
"You'll always be beautiful in my eyes..."
Napangiti siya. Kinuha ni Cyla si David at medyo tinulak siya ng mas palapit kay Terrence.
Bahagya siyang natawa at mas lumapit pa.
"The world will turn and the seasons will change... And all the lessons we will learn will be beautiful and strange..."
It was indeed beautiful and strange. At nalagpasan nilang lahat iyon. What's more? They didn't depend on their love and own strength alone.
Every season was an opportunity for them to know God, and the time for the Lord to reveal His power and love to them...
Kaya kung ano mang nakaabang sa kanila sa mga susunod pang panahon, handa sila. Dahil mas gusto pa nilang mas makilala ang Panginoon nang magkasama.
"We'll have our fill of tears, our share of sighs..."
They did. And she won't mind sharing more with Terrence.
"My only prayer is that you realize...You'll always be beautiful in my eyes..."
Huminto ito sa pagtugtog pero may ibang nagpatuloy ng tugtog. Luminga-linga siya para hanapin kung saan pa galing iyon, ngunit nahapit na siya ni Terrence sa baywang.
Napunta na ulit dito ang buo niyang pansin. Sa pagyapos nito sa baywang niya, pumalibot naman ang mga braso niya sa leeg nito.
"You will always be beautiful in my eyes," he continued singing and swayed her. "And the passing years will show that you will always grow ever more beautiful in my eyes..."
Napayuko siya ng akmang hahalikan siya nito sa mga labi. "Wait, my breath..." pigil niya sa paghalik nito.
Natawa ito. Terrence gently raised her chin. Nagtama ang mga mata nila. Then, he kissed her swiftly on the lips.
"Happy birthday, baby. Alam mo, may ni-reveal sa'kin ang Panginoon nito lang."
"What is it?" she excitedly asked.
"While I was reading my Bible, ang laging lumalabas na kuwento ay ang mga meaning behind the names of the characters. Lahat pala talaga, ultimo sa pangalan, pina-plano ng Diyos. Dahil may dahilan. Then..."
"Then?"
Ngumisi ito. "I searched for the meaning of my ex-girlfriends' names."
Napahinto si Eunice. Hindi niya alam anong ire-react. "Ha?" natatawang sambit niya na lang. "Paano naman doon na-lead ang quiet time mo sa pangalan ng mga ex-girlfriend mo?"
Natawa ito. "Let me explain."
And there are lines upon my face from a lifetime of smiles...
When the time comes to embrace for one long last while...
Huminto muna ito sa pagsayaw sa kanya. "I don't know if it's hundred percent legit. But when I searched for Frances' name meaning. 'Free' ang ibig sabihin. At naisip ko, noong naging kami, masyado nga akong naging 'free'. Masyado akong nasiyahan sa 'freedom' na magmahal, kahit hindi pleasing sa Diyos ang ginagawa ko. Until it broke my heart. Because it's not the true freedom that God offers.

Napayakap siya dito. "I love you so much!" Umaapaw na agad ang ligaya sa puso niya, nagsisimula pa lang ang araw!
"Eunice, pangalan mo pa lang, panalo na."
They laughed together at his corny joke. Buti na lang, brown eyes ito! Idiniin ni Terrence ang mga labi nito sa kanya.

Niyakap siya nito nang mahigpit na mahigpit. "I love you with all my heart, Eunice. Your beauty won't ever fade, because You are a woman of God."

Lumapit si Cyla na buhat pa rin si baby David. Pinagkasya sila ni Terrence sa loob ng bisig nito.

Agad na napatingala si Eunice. Nanlaki ang mga mata niya nang makita kung sino ang nasa balkonahe.
"Mang Emman?!"
Ngumiti ang matandang lalaki na naging saksi sa pinaka-umpisa ng pagsasama nila ni Terrence. "Happy birthday, hija. Pasensya na at ngayon lang ako nakadalaw."
Umapaw na, pero mas pinaapaw pa ng Diyos ang saya sa puso ni Eunice!
Napatingin siya sa asawa.
Kininditan siya nito.
Pagbaba ni Mang Emman ng garden ay mabilis niya itong niyakap.
"Maligayang kaarawan, hija."
"I miss you so much, Mang Emman! And your WOWs!"
Natawa ito. "Ang masasabi ko lang ngayon, lahat ng sakit noon... Doble ang ligayang kapalit, hindi ba?"
"Yes, Mang Emman!" Nilingon niya si Terrence na buhat si baby David habang nakikipagtawanan kay Cyla. "Sobra-sobra po ang kapalit na ligaya."
"Sa Diyos lang mayroon niyan," ngiti nito.
Amen!
Pero hindi pa natatapos doon ang birthday bash niya! Pagkatapos nilang mag-almusal sa labas ng garden, pinag-ayos siya ni Terrence.
Kaya naman naligo siya at nag-ayos. After six months, Eunice was able to doll-up!
Hindi masyadong humahabol sa kanya si baby David ngayon. Parang alam na birthday niya, at nakikisama ang anak. Terrence was able to feed David using a baby bottle. Inilalagay lang nito ang pumped-breast milk niya doon. And David will latch it. Hindi rin ito nagta-tantrums.
Iyon yata ang regalo sa kanya ng anak sa birthday niya!
"Saan tayo pupunta?" tanong niya kay Terrence. Nasa kotse sila ngayon. Si Cyla at Mang Emman—na kalong si baby David ay nakasakay sa likuran.
"To your birthday party, saan pa ba?"
Nanlaki ang mga mata niya. Wala sa usapan nilang magbi-birthday party siya ngayong taon!
"You're going to enjoy it, Mommy!" ani Cyla sa likod.
Hindi pa rin siya makapaniwala hanggang sa makarating sila sa bahay ng Kuya Eugene niya—na dating bahay nila noong mga pa bata sila.
Pagpasok niya ay agad siyang sinalubong ng lahat ng kapamilya at kaibigan nila!
"Happy birthday, Mommy Eunice!" sabay-sabay na bati ng mga ito.
Naiyak na siya sa sobrang saya.
Daddy Johnny kissed her cheeks. "Your parents in heaven are so proud of you, Eunice. Your life now was the life they always prayed for you to have since you were born."
Yumakap siya dito at nagpasalamat sa matiyagang pagpapalaki nito sa kanya.
Maya-maya ay hinawakan ng Kuya Eugene niya ang kamay niya at ginabayan siya sa labas ng garden kung saan naka-set up ng isang princess-themed party!
All the guests have tiaras and crowns on their heads. Naglalaro din sa pastel colors ang color scheme ng buong paligid.
Pinaupo siya nito sa pinaka-sentro. It's like a "throne" made for her.
"You always want a princess-themed party, cupcake," sabi ng Kuya niya. "Noong mga bata ka pa, ito ang lagi mong gustong theme sa birthday mo."
"Yes, Kuya..."
Lumapit si Tanya at may inabot kay Eugene. A real crown! Not that of a royalty—but like a crown in a beauty pageant!
Her brother gently put the crown on her head. "You are a daughter of the true King. You are God's princess, Eunice."
Niyakap niya ang kapatid. Sumama sa yakap si Tanya na buntis na ulit, pati ang pamangkin niyang si Heart at si Ezekiel.
Humalik siya sa mga ito at nagpasalamat.
Then, her high school best friends approached her next. Nagkatilian sila nang magkita-kita. Syrel, Lorraine, and Rizza pulled and hugged her. "Happy birthday, Eunice!"
Sumunod na lumapit sa kanya at bumati ay sina Geoff, Zoey at Zofiya! Napayakap din siya sa mga ito. Talagang lumuwas ang mga ito para lang makadalo sa birthday niya.
Pagkatapos ay nanlaki ang mga mata niya nang makilala ang susunod na palapit.
Si Alfred! Kasama ang anak nito at ni Rachelle, si Renz!
"Ang laki mo na, baby Renz!" bulalas ni Eunice. The boy shyly smiled at her. "Kilala mo pa ba ako?"
Natawa si Alfred nang nahihiyang nagtago ang anak nito sa likod ng binti nito. "Pasensya na, Eunice. Mahiyain ang anak ko. Happy birthday! Sabi ni Terrence, matutuwa ka daw kung nandito kami ni Renz."
"Sobra! Thank you so much! Lumuwas pa kayo..." Dahil akala niya noon na anak ni Terrence si Renz, natutunan ni Eunice na mag-alaga ng baby. Kaya kahit laging puyat kay baby David, ginamit niya ang experience noon. "Kumusta ka na ba? Nag-asawa ka ba ulit?"
Natawa si Alfred at napakamot ng ulo. "Hindi na... hindi pa. Ewan ko, kung anong loloobin ng Diyos. Ang sa'kin lang mas maging mabuting ama ako kay Renz. Mas may maganda na 'kong trabaho ngayon sa probinsya. Salamat sa lahat ng tulong niyo ni Terrence para sa pagpapagamot ng bata."
Pagkatapos ng kumustahan ay nagpaalam na muna si Alfred na papakainin ang anak. Nagpayakap na rin sa kanya si Renz. Eunice will always adore Rachelle's son.
Pagkaalis ni Alfred at Renz ay lumapit sa kanya ang mga magulang ni Terrence.
"Our son is the happiest whenever he's with you, Eunice," sabi ni Mama Theresa. "Lagi akong magpapasalamat sa Diyos sa araw na 'to. Dahil ito ang araw na ipinanganak ka, para maghatid ng pag-ibig sa mga tao sa paligid mo."
"Thank you, Mama..." Eunice hugged her mother-in-law.
"We are always thankful that we have you as our daughter-in-law," dagdag pa ni Papa Enzo. "You are God's answered prayer to us, Eunice. Ikaw ang pinagdasal naming maging manugang talaga."
"Thank you, Papa! Thank you po for patiently waiting for me to grow. And for accepting me in your family kahit na hindi pa po ako Christian noon."
Noong hindi pa sila ayos ni Terrence, ang mga magulang nito ang lagi nang maayos ang pakikisama sa kanya. Her in-laws always made sure that she's properly taken care of. Parang siya pa ang anak ng mga ito kaysa kay Terrence.
"God told us you will be. And you are now. Hindi ka lang kristiyano ngayon, anak. You are a woman of God."
Niyakap siya ng mga ito at binigyan ng tig-isang halik sa pisngi.
Hindi talaga siya nakakataka na sobrang sweet ni Terrence. His parents were the reason why! Ang mga ito ang "original" na malambing at mapagmahal.
Siyempre, hindi mawawala sa birthday niya ang mga--
"Maligayang kaarawan sa aming reyna!" sigaw ni Peter.
"Nagbibigay pugay kaming mga tagahanga mo, aming reyna!" sabi naman ni Jude.
"Tapakan mo kami," hirit ni Andrew.
Natawa si Eunice. Wala na yatang tatalo pa sa mga pinsan ni Terrence.
Lumabas si Titus at James, may hawak na malaking tarpaulin! "Happy birthday, Queen Eunice!"

Napahawak na siya ng tiyan sa kakatawa. Kung gaano katino ang asawa niya, sobrang maloko ng mga pinsan nito!
"Pasali nga diyan sa fandom niyo," sabi ni Frances. "Mukhang si Matthew kasama diyan, eh."
Nakakunot-noo si Matthew. "Sa ibang fandom ako."
"Saan, aber?"
"Matthew loves Frances."
Napasipol sina Peter at Jude. Nang-aasar ang tawa nina Andrew, Titus, at James.
"Napaka-corny!"
"Itakwil niyo na si Matthew sa angkan natin!"
Pabirong sinuntok ni Matthew ang mga pinsan nito. Isa-isa. Tawa ng tawa ang mga ito.
Naikot lang ni Frances ang mga mata pero nakangisi naman. Bumaling ito sa kanya. "Happy birthday, Eunice!" at saka bumeso.
"Thank you so much for being here!" Niyakap niya ito. "Kailan niyo pa alam na may pa-surprise?"
"Last year pa! Talagang pinaghandaan ni Terrence, girl! Ako pa inutusan niya para mag-canvass ng mga kailangan sa birthday party na ito. Nag-enjoy naman ako mag-online shopping para ma-achieve 'to. Siya nagbabayad lahat, eh."
"Thank you for helping! Sobrang gusto ko lahat ng designs."
"Siyempre, ginalingan ko. Pagpapasalamat ko na rin sa'yo, Eunice. Kasi mahal na mahal mo si Cyla. Pero credits to Terrence talaga. Siya ang nag-approve lahat bago ako bigyan ng pambili."
Sandali, nasaan na ba ang asawa niya?
Mula nang pumasok siya, hindi niya na napansin ito. Natanaw niya lang si Mang Emman na nag-aalaga muna ngayon kay baby David.
May narinig silang feedback ng microphone. Gulat na napalingon si Eunice nang makitang may stage palang naka-set up!
Nandoon si Terrence at may hawak ng mic. Maya-maya ay umakyat din sa stage ang mga pinsan nito.
Matthew grabbed an electric guitar and stood behind another mic. James grabbed the bass guitar, Andrew sat behind the drums, and then Jude tested the keyboards. Titus held the triangle and chimes.
"Yes! Go, mga pinsan! Itaas ang bandera ng mga Lanza!" Siyempre, si Peter ang taga-cheer.
"This is like college all over, again," sabi ni Frances at hinila siya patayo.
Magpe-perform ang mga ito!
Masakit na ang panga ni Eunice sa kakangiti pero, wala siyang kayang gawin ngayon kundi ngumiti lang talaga!
Akala niya sobrang saya niya na kanina sa morning greeting ni Terrence, pero madami pala talaga itong hinanda para sa kanya ngayong araw.
"Family and friends, thank you so much for coming to my wife's birthday today," anunsiyo ni Terrence. "As you all know, Eunice is a woman of God and I'm sure she doesn't want us to praise her. But instead, she wants us to praise the Lord altogether."
"Yes!" sigaw niya. "Amen!"
Tumingin sa kanya si Terrence. "I love you, baby."
Umulan ng tuksuhan mula sa mga bisita. Parang kinikiliti si Eunice sa puso. She felt like a teenager.
"So, why not let's start the party by honoring the Lord? Let's dance and sing to this praise song. Pang-kabataan ito, but we can always be young at heart, right?"
"Right!!!" sigaw ng mga tao.
Nagsimulang tumugtog ang isang groovy beat ng isa sa mga paboritong praise song ni Eunice.
Nagsilapitan ang mga babae sa baba ng stage. Parang may totoong pa-concert.
Pabirong nagtitilian sina Tanya, Frances, at Zoey. Nakikitili din pati sina Lorraine, Rizza, at Syrel. Naki-join na lang din si Eunice.
"Nothing can separate even if I ran away...Your love never fails..." Si Matthew ang unang kumanta.
"I know I still make mistakes... But You have new mercies for me everyday. Your love never fails..."
Terrence sang next. Itinaas nito ang kamay, nakaturo sa langit. "You stay the same through the ages, Your love never changes! There may be pain in the night but joy comes in the morning..."
Zoey lead a simple step for them to follow. Sumunod naman ang lahat dito. Pakiramdam ni Eunice parang bahagi siya ng isang youth service.
They danced and sang lively for the Lord.
"And when the oceans rage, I don't have to be afraid... Because I know that You love me! Your love never fails!"
Napatingala si Eunice at napangiti sa ganda ng kalangitan. Someday, when the right time comes, they will dance and sing in heaven, too. At sigurado, nasa mismong harap nila ang Diyos habang umaawit at sumasayaw ng mga papuri.
"The chasm is far too wide, I never thought I'd reach the other side... 'Cause Your love never fails..."
Pumikit siya at nagpasalamat sa Diyos na lumikha ng lahat.
Because God gave his only begotten son. And because Jesus Christ died for us—there's an assurance that we will go home to heaven after a very challenging life here on earth. Basta't tatanggapin mo ng buong puso ang Panginoong Hesu Kristo sa buhay mo ngayon, sigurado ang kaligtasan mo.
"The wind is strong and the water's deep," si Matthew ulit. "I'm not alone in these open seas. 'Cause Your love never fails!"
Idinilat niya ang mga mata at tumingin sa paligid. Napapaligiran siya ng mga taong may tunay na pag-ibig.
She saw Heart and Cyla taking care of their younger siblings and other babies—with the help of Daddy Johnny, Terrence's parents, and Mang Emman.
Lord God, thank You for a love that can be felt through all ages... Mapabata man o matanda. Salamat po sa pag-ibig na para sa lahat...
"'Cause you stay the same through the ages! Your love never changes..." Terrence sang with all his heart. Dalawang kamay na nito ang nakataas sa kalangitan.
"There may be pain in the night but joy comes in the morning..."
Hinawakan ni Geoff ang kamay ni Zoey at sabay ang dalawa sa pagsayaw. Hinila namang pilit ni Tanya ang Kuya Eugene niya para makisali sa kanila. Napansin din ni Eunice ang pagkindat ni Matthew kay Frances. Napangiti nang malawak ang huli at nag-thumbs up.
Lord God, thank you for these hearts that were tested through circumstances. And because You overcome their hearts, they have their happily ever afters now... Salamat po sa pag-ibig ng dalawang taong kayang humarap sa altar at sumumpa ng walang hanggang pag-ibig sa harap Niyo...
She lovingly gazed at Terrence.
Salamat po sa pag-ibig na ibinigay Niyo para makatuwang naming bumuo ng pamilya at makasama sa paglilingkod sa Inyo...

Nagtaas ng mga kamay ang mga tao at sinabayan ng palakpak ang beat ng kanta.
Lumapit si Eunice kina Syrel, Lorraine, at Rizza para makisama sa pagpalakpak.
"Oh no, love never fails!" kanta ni Matthew. "'Cause You make all things work together for my good! You make all things work together for my good!"
"Yes, let's sing it all together!" aya ni Terrence. "You make all things work together for my good!"
Eunice danced with her high school best friends. "You make all things work together for my good!" they sang.
Maraming salamat, Panginoon, sa tunay na pag-ibig ng mga kaibigan. Salamat po sa pag-ibig na nagbibigay ng saya katulad ng sa pamilya. Pag-ibig na mapagkakatiwalaan at matatakbuhan. Pag-ibig na tatanggap sa'yo kahit sino ka man at mamahalin ka na parang isang tunay na kapatid.
"You make all things work together for my good!" all the visitors sang out loud. "You make all things work together for my good!"
Nagtama ang tingin nila ni Terrence. Ngumiti ito at may itinuro sa likod niya.
Agad na lumingon si Eunice. Napatakip siya ng bibig at agad na uminit gilid ng mga mata niya.
Nakita niya si Tita Gena! At sa likuran nito...nakangiting kumaway si Addie sa kanya. Then, Soleil... she shyly waved and smiled at her, too.
Tinulak siya ng mga kaibigan niya papunta kina Addie at Soleil.
Tumakbo ang dalawa para salubungin siya.
Nagyakap-yakap silang tatlo at sabay-sabay silang bumulalas ng iyak. There hearts instantly re-connected.
"'Cause you stay the same through the ages... Your love never changes! It may be pain in the night but joy comes in the morning!"
Indeed. After every pain is joy...
"Je suis desole, Eunice. I'm so sorry," iyak ni Soleil. "Nagsisisi ako. You are not the problem but me. I'm sorry for blaming it all to you. The truth is I'm just blinded by envy but, I love you."
"You're forgiven a long time ago," umiiyak na sabi niya. "I love you, too, Sol! Kayo ni Addie!"
Addie smiled. "Soleil accepted Jesus, again, Eunice! Sa kanya ako unang nakapag-share ng gospel! She said 'yes' to Jesus, again!"
Lalo siyang naiyak. Praise God! "I'm so proud of you, both!"
"Happy birthday!" magkasabay pang bati nina Soleil at Addie sa kanya.
Parang wala ng bukas ang pag-ibig at ligaya na natatanggap ni Eunice sa puso niya ngayong araw.
Nagyakap-yakap ulit silang tatlo.
Jesus, thank You for a love that forgives. Thank You for a love that can heal and restore. A love that can start all over again, with a clean slate!
Truly, you make all things together for my good, for our good—for the good of all the people who loves You.

Eunice embraced Tita Gena.
"Happy birthday, Eunice. See how God truly works?" Pinunasan nito ang mga luha niya.
Tumango siya. "Yes, T-Tita...Kitang kita ko po ang Diyos sa likod ng lahat ng 'to. I praise God every day, Tita. Malungkot man o masaya. Masakit man o hindi. Even in God's silence, I will praise Him."
Tita Gena smiled proudly. "The greatest love we can share to the people around us is Jesus, Eunice. And sometimes, when people fail to listen to the Gospel we share, God makes sure they can still hear it... through their eyes.
"When you and Terrence started to live and love like Jesus, the people around you started to see what they are missing in life. They started to see Jesus in you, in us, and they would want to come to Him."
"And when the oceans rage, I don't have to be afraid!" patuloy na pagkanta ni Terrence. "Because I know that You love me!"
Sa lahat ng pag-ibig na ipinag-pasalamat ni Eunice, iisang pag-ibig lang din naman ang nagbigay ng lahat ng iyon.
We love because He first loved us.
God's love never fails. Even if we run away from Him, even if we refused to be with Him, and even if we turned our back against Him...
He'll work mightily, so that we will always... always go back to the One who first loved us all...
Sa Kanyang pag-ibig lang naman ang sigurado, hindi nagbabago, at walang katapusan.
Kaya masayang inalay ni Eunice ang buhay niya. Buong puso niyang ipinagkatiwala sa Diyos ang lahat-lahat sa kanya...
Because in this world, people will continuously hurt and fail us. They can distort the meaning of love for us.
But if we love Him first? Give our heart to Him first? Place our trust and faith in Him first?
God will never fail us.

MARAHANG isinara ni Terrence ang pinto ng banyo pagkatapos niyang maligo. He's drying his hair with a towel when he saw Eunice, Cyla, and baby David all sleeping soundly.
Napangiti siya sa tanawin. Paniguradong napagod ang lahat sa buong-araw na selebrasyon ng birthday ni Eunice.
Nagpapasalamat si Terrence sa Diyos dahil lahat ng plinano niya ay natupad. Pati ang pag-imbita niya kay Mang Emman, Alfred at Renz, Tita Gena, at lalong lalo na kina Addie at Soleil.
Walang naging aberya sa lahat ng naka-plano. He thanked God, again, for allowing his plans to happen smoothly. Isang taon niyang tinago sa asawa pero hindi naman ito nakahalata kahit minsan. God allowed the surprise birthday celebration to be a success!
Maingat siyang lumapit sa kama. Pagkuwa'y marahan siyang yumuko at nag-iwan ng tig-isang halik sa noo ng mga anak. Then, he lightly left a kiss on his wife's lips.
Terrence closed his eyes as he can hear his own heart singing out of contentment and happiness, again.
Lord God, thank You for the unconditional love of a family.
Thank You, for Your never-failing love for all of us. You are truly our one and only heavenly Father. Maraming, maraming salamat po!
Love is indeed the most powerful thing. Matatapos, titigil, at lilipas rin ang lahat dito sa mundo. Pero ang pag-ibig, hinding-hinding magwa-wakas.
Humiga siya at niyakap si Cyla. Mas lumapit siya kay Eunice—ang anak nila ay natutulog sa dibdib nito. He extended his arm to reach Eunice and baby David.
If it wasn't for Jesus' real love, he won't be able to have his family inside his arms now.
Mula pagkabata, ito na ang panalangin ni Terrence. Aside from being a licensed engineer, he always pictured himself as a family man—a faithful husband and a good father.
God heard his innocent prayers before. Kung saan-saan man lumiko ng daan si Terrence noon, lagi siyang pinababalik ng Diyos, laging tinatanggap... para madala siya sa nag-iisang lugar kung saan siya dapat nandoon.
Here with Eunice, with their little family...
Pinikit niya ang mga mata at pinagdasal ang asawa at mga anak.
Lord God, my family will continue to serve You. Only You. Walang ibang Diyos kundi Ikaw lang po. Guide me, Lord. Always fill me with the Holy Spirit, so I can always lead my wife and children to You.
Because I know, You are the only God who's worth praising, worshipping, and serving too.
Mold my love to be like yours, Jesus. I pray that I can unconditionally love my children and my wife all the days of my life.
Forgive us, Lord God, for the things that we did—intentionally or unintentionally, that did not please you. Forgive us and cleanse our hearts. Renew our minds and replenish our souls with your Spirit.
Discipline me, my Lord God. Teach me to obey. Obedience demonstrates our love for You. Teach our whole family to obey and surrender to Your will always because we love You.
I know that Eunice and I are still works in progress. Therefore, we will always hold on to Your promises. We will continue to give thanks for Your endless grace. We will always remember how great your love for us is.
Thank You for this wonderful day, Heavenly Father! Thank You for allowing Eunice—my true love, to be born. We will continue to give you glory and live a life full of the best, toughest, and greatest love coming all from You.
You will always be our ultimate source of love. Bless me. Bless us. Bless our whole family, my Lord God.
