maison's pov
"SO MR. PANKOW." i joke, sticking a plastic spoon into my ice cream. i'd gotten sea salt caramel, which rudy made a face at but also wouldn't let me pay for. what a gentlemen. "where are you from?"
we're currently sitting in his car, parked in the parking lot of a cold stone creamery. i have my feet propped up on the console with my back up against the door. he's sitting normally but moved his seat back so he'd have more room to move his body around to slightly face me.
he rose an eyebrow at me but answered, "alaska."
i scoop some ice cream onto my spoon. "no way! i've always wanted to go there."
"why haven't you?" he questions, sounding genuinely curious.
"i promised i'd go with my mom and one of my younger brothers but we haven't been able to get the right timing." i reply. everyone in my family's always so busy it's hard to link up schedules usually.
"my turn." he objects as i go to ask him another question. "how many brothers do you have? i keep trying to count whenever you're talking about them but i get lost every time." he complains, stabbing his ice cream in annoyance.
i laugh, making him smile and look back over at me. "i have five, six if you count austin."
he smiles softly. "you guys are close."
i try to bite back the size of my smile. "he's my best friend." i answer truthfully. we'd met years ago in a grocery store in los angeles and clicked instantly.
"i heard him calling your mom earlier." rudy says, interrupting my thought process.
"he calls her every tuesday." i roll my eyes. "i swear she loves him more than her actual children."
this makes rudy laugh loudly. i can't help but grin widely. he has a really cute smile.
i eat some more ice cream before adding, "i'm being completely serious. the last time we went on family vacation she insisted austin had to come or we wouldn't go."
speak of the devil and he shall appear.
my phone started to buzz in the cup holder with a facetime request from austin.
i answered it but left it in the cup holder.
"hey so—where are you?" he cut himself off when he realized he couldn't see me. rudy and i giggled but changed our positions so we were both somewhat in the frame. the blond boy next to me smelled really good. like really good. a mixture of sea salt, scented conditioner and a natural woodsy smell. swoon.
"we're in my car." rudy assures. "don't worry i'm not kidnapping her."
"please do so i don't have to go home to drew." i comment.
"HEY!" drew's voice echoed from somewhere in the house.
"i'm just kidding." i assure, laughing a little.
"anyways." austin says. "we want milkshakes do you guys wanna come with?"
rudy and i look at each other expectantly. "i'm down if you are." he says, cerulean eyes staring straight at me. it makes my spine shudder. even his eyes are pretty!
"sure." i shrug.
rudy tears his eyes away from me quickly, making me frown. did i do something? i try to shake it off as i finish my ice cream.
"we'll come get you." rudy tells my best friend.
"okayyyyy." austin replies, dragging out the y just as drew flops into the frame. "bye guys! love you mac."
"i love you too." i barely manage to respond before the call end abruptly, probably by accident as drew had just tackled austin onto the couch. "well okay."
rudy giggles as he puts the car in drive. i pull my seatbelt on with one hand and settle back into my seat.
